Top- seeded Cortland defeated the Grove City Wolverines in game two of the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament at Falcon Park, 10-1.
In the fourth game of the elongated day one, No. 2 Ithaca fell to seventh seeded Ohio Wesleyan, 5-3, in a game that ended well after midnight.
Between the fifth through the seventh innings in the first game, Cortland, who will play Montclair State at 4:30 p.m. today, recorded eight runs furthering the distance between the teams. Catcher Anthony Gardner and senior first baseman, John Giametta roped back-to-back home runs for the Red Dragons. Gardner's was a three-run homer in the seventh.
Brendan Rowlands was on the mound for Cortland throwing seven strikeouts, five walks and allowing three hits.
Also at the plate for Cortland was senior Mike Zaccardo with four hits and Anthony Coromato and Joey Russo each had an RBI single.
The Red Dragons now have a 34-game winning streak in their 16th appearance in the NCAA playoffs which is the longest active streak in Division III.
In the final game, the Battling Bishops withstood an Ithaca rally in the bottom of the ninth that saw the Bombers score two runs and put the go-ahead run on second with no outs before Ohio Wesleyan's defense got them out of a jam. Eric Ferguson and Brandon Wolf powered the Bombers with two hits each. Ithaca will play Farmingdale in an elimination game today at 1:15 p.m.
In game one, Montclair State took the win over the Eastern Connecticut Warriors, 8-7.
Leading the fourth-seeded Montclair State was Luke Politan, who hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the deal with Montclair State scoring seven of their eight runs in the last three at-bats.
The score was tied, 3-3 in the seventh with the Warriors posting four runs that inning thanks to a couple errors by Montclair State. By the bottom of the seventh, Montclair State picked up another two runs with a homerun from Jeff Miller and an RBI single from Rob Clark.
Recording the win on the mound for Montclair State was Stephen Piscitello who allowed two hits and three walks.
For the Warriors, Melvin Castillo and Ismael Bolorin both earned three hits, Castillo had a double and Bolorin added a double and a triple.
Michael Nunes had three hits and a double for Montclair State while Andrew Himmelfarb contributed two hits and two RBIs.
In a delayed game three, Rensselaer rallied to beat Farmingdale, 7-6 with a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth.
Patrick Reardon had the game winning single for Rensselaer. Rensselaer had three seventh-inning runs taking the lead, 6-5.
Matt Muscatiello had a sacrifice fly, Reardon and Dan Valentine each earned an RBI single with Reardon finishing with four hits and a double.
Andrew Novick won on the mound for Rensselaer relieving for 3.2 innings and giving up only one hit.
