Group to give Call to Action progress report

When leaders from Cayuga County's private sector unveiled an action plan in early 2007 to promote community growth, they promised their report would not be another lofty document that merely gathers dust.
They pledged to actively work on implementing the plan, and they were urging the pubic and government leaders to join them.

Today, that same group is updating the community on the progress that has been made, and the work that remains.

The Cayuga County Office of Tourism's annual National Tourism Week luncheon is the venue for the latest report on the Call to Action: Blueprint for our Region's Future. The event is being held at the Springside Inn in Fleming.

Like they did more than a year ago, presenters from the group will go over seven areas of focus: cultural development, infrastructure technology, health care, riverfront development, innovation and entrepreneurship institute, watershed protection and job development.

The group provided an outline of the presentation to local media this week. Among the highlights for each focus area:

• Cultural development - A nonprofit group has been formed to work toward the creation of a musical theater festival in and around Auburn, with funding from several private foundations and the city and county used for planning work. A consulting firm is helping the group formulate a proposed plan that is expected by the end of the month.

• Infrastructure technology - City and county planners are investigating wireless services and needs, and are identifying state and federal grant opportunities aimed at boosting services in the area.

• Health care - The group has focused efforts on physician recruitment, and working with Auburn Memorial Hospital, has seen 11 new physicians credentialed in the county in the first quarter of 2008. In addition, new physician staffing is being arranged for the AMH maternity unit. A state grant secured by state Sen. Michael Nozzolio for $100,000 is helping recruiting.

• Riverfront development - The city has a $500,000 grant for revitalization of the Market Street area, and grants are being pursued for the Wadsworth and Osborne street areas, as well. The city is also including riverfront development in its pending comprehensive plan.

• Innovation and entrepreneurship institute - Working under the auspices of Cayuga Community College, an institute has been formed with a board of directors and academic advisory board. Funds have been secured by Nozzolio to establish a business incubator system in conjunction with the institute, and the creation of a student enterprise competition and entrepreneurship wall of fame is under way.

• Watershed protection - An intermunicipally funded watershed steward position has been created and filled in the past year.

• Job development - Group members are in discussions with city and county officials over the creation of an economic development one-stop center that would streamline the process for businesses looking for assistance. Such a one-stop may be funded at the start through a privately donated sinking fund that would be established if governments establish long-term operational funding. An economic development summit is also being planned.
