Lucky track teams have an abundance of athletes to choose from. They can put a girl in an event and not worry if they have enough for a taxing distance relay later in the day or enough endurance to run in four or five events.
Moravia hasn't been fortunate in the numbers game this season but has, well, taken it in stride. The Blue Devils don't have enough girls to field a soccer team or a lacrosse squad - they would have a decent bench in basketball. But despite only having 10 members, Moravia has powered its way to a 3-2 league record and even won an invitational.
“Our numbers are down, but everyone is contributing,” said Blue Devils coach Jan Hunsinger. “They all have a very positive attitude - they all work very hard.”
Some of the girls will participate in four events to keep Moravia competitive. The Blue Devils can take a first place with no problem, but there isn't much depth after that - especially in the relay events.
“It's a little harder because some teams we run against have extra girls, so they can just throw them into events and score more points,” said junior Claire Hunsinger, who excels in the long, high and triple jumps. “We have one girl in each event so even if we win - which happens a lot because we have good girls - we miss out on the second and third place points.”
“You have to make sure that everyone is in as many events as they can possibly be in and hope you come up with the right combination,” Jan Hunsinger said.
Though there are only 10, the girls that Moravia has are poised to do well in the postseason. Senior Emily Dusseau is ranked in the top 20 in the 100 and 200 in Section IV, and Alicia McLaughlin is 14th in the 400 hurdles. The 400 relay team is also 14th. In field events, Hunsinger is 18th in the triple jump and ninth in the high jump.
Jennifer Cornwell is just one of two girls who only participates in field events. She excels at both the shot put and discus, and is ranked second in former and eighth in the latter.
“It's interesting because I go watch them and they get really tired, and I finish and I'm not tired,” she joked.
With all the talent, it's almost not surprising that the Blue Devils are above .500 in dual meets. What was a little shocking was the win at the Union Springs Relays. Moravia also placed fourth at the Weedsport Invitational.
“That was fantastic because it was so unexpected,” said the senior Dusseau, who will attend Long Island University next year. “I feel like our girls, even though we have so few, are really good at what we do so we were able to pull off some firsts.”
Dusseau said that everyone on the team pulls their weight.
“Our team is very versatile, so if we don't run something we can give it to the team so we can create relays,” she said. “If we have a specialized event we all just really run hard and try to get as many points as we possibly can.”
