With a 38-match winning streak on the line, the Lakers defeated Westhill 208-229 at Skaneateles Country Club Tuesday. Freshman Eric Edmunds was the medalist of the event, shooting a 37.
Edmunds is fairly familiar with the medalist role this year. His all-time low was at Pine Grove Golf Course against Solvay when he rounded the day with a 32. Also that day, the Lakers set a school record for overall score with a 179.
Edmunds is honored to be on the team as a three-year starter as a freshman.
“I am excited to know that I have more years ahead of me,” Edmunds said. “It's nice to know that too.”
Youth isn't something that is new for Skaneateles. Last year the Lakers had two seniors, while this year they only have one.
“The good thing about kids that young is they tend to forget easily about their score,” Quijano said. “They may have a bad hole and then rebound from it easier then most. I tell them to just relax and not to worry about their scores.”
Most of his players have been a part of the winning streak that has brought them a Section III crown.
Jeff Baldetti shot a 40 and Bryan Stokes-Cawley finished with a 39.
Ian Vanderven had a 47, Justin Sisson carded a 45 and Ty Lorey ended with a 49.
The Warriors leading scorers were Tim O'Brien and Mike Wild, each shooting a 44.
The Lakers current team is a dedicated group with a serious goal of repeated as sectional champs.
“They take the game very serious,” Quijano said.
The Lakers will have a busy next couple of days. Saturday they go to Kannon Valley to prepare for the Section III playoffs.
“After that we will just sit down as a team and talk about sectionals,” Quijano said. “Then we just plug away. They can't worry about the scores, that is so key.”
Having a young team makes it easy for the Lakers to not worry about the scores.
“They tend to just shake off all the bad shots,” Quijano said. “They rely solely on their talent. It's a lot of fun to watch and witness. They are so focused on winning, it makes it special.”
Baldetti is proud to be on the team with this amount of success.
“It's a lot of fun,” he said. “It would be nice to win sectionals again and go undefeated in back-to-back years.”
Skaneateles (13-0) battles Westhill again today.
