AUBURN - Taxpayers will see only one spending proposition on the Auburn Enlarged City School District ballot next week.
Superintendent Joseph D. “J.D” Pabis emphasized during a public hearing on the budget Tuesday that voters will only be voting for the proposed 2008-09 district budget and choosing three of six candidates to sit on the board of education on May 20.

The vote will not include any propositions relating to the proposed near $15.7 million capital project dealing with school infrastructure, energy efficiency and technology as well as renovations at Holland Stadium, including the installation of synthetic turf.

That capital project vote is scheduled for June 26.

“In no way is this representing anything towards the capital project,” Pabis said, “and in no way is it related or tied into the artificial turf at Holland Stadium. I would like to make that perfectly clear.”

District voters will be asked to authorize a 2008-09

budget of $66,490,371, which represents a 4.91 percent increase over last year's numbers, with an estimated tax levy increase of 3.28 percent. They will also vote for school board members.

Members of the public did not ask any questions or voice comments.

Polls will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 20 at one of five polling places based upon legislative district.

People in District 10 can vote at Casey Park Elementary School; District 11 and the portion of Sennett within the Auburn school district at East Middle School; the portion of Owasco in the district at Owasco Elementary School; Districts 12, 14 and the portion of Fleming in the district at Seward Elementary School; and Districts 13 and 15 at West Middle School.

In other news:

* The board opted to re-advertise for vendors to install a computerized reader system that would provide computerized and accurate readouts of all electrical systems, including thermostats, as part of the 2006 capital project.

One vendor bid for the project by the May 1 deadline, Pabis said, but there are other bids that can provide a similar service.

“We wanted to make sure the competitive bidding process was just that - competitive,” he said.

The district has 45 days to accept a bid. Work is likely to be completed by the fall.

* A special board meeting will be convened 7 p.m., May 21 at the Harriet Tubman Administration Building, 78 Thornton Ave., Auburn, to confirm the election of board members. A regular board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., May 27 at the Auburn High School Library.
