An on-and-off bridge closure will mean an overnight detour of about 13 miles until sometime in June for motorists traveling on Routes 5 and 20 between Cayuga and Seneca counties.
The state transportation Department said work will begin Thursday, May 15, on a bridge over the Cayuga Lake Outlet at the Cayuga/Seneca county line.

The closure will be in place most nights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday. On nights when the construction schedule does not demand on-site work, the bridge will remain open to traffic.

Josh Ribakove, the regional spokesperson for the DOT, said the bridge was damaged about two years ago when a truck hit the steel trussing. Work to repair the damage has been scheduled at night and Ribakove said the DOT has been in contact with local emergency services providers about the closure.

Workers will be able to clear the bridge in 20 minutes or less in the event that emergency vehicles need to cross, Ribakove said.

Local traffic will be able to approach both ends of the bridge on Routes 5 and 20 to ensure access to the homes and businesses in the area.

During closure hours, traffic will be routed via the following detour, approximately 13 miles in length:

- Eastbound: north on Route 89, then east on Route 31, then south on Route 90 to Routes 5 and 20.

- Westbound: north on Route 90, then west on Route 31, then south on Route 89 to Routes 5 and 20.

Contractors have until the end of June to finish the work, but Ribakove said the job is expected to be completed before the deadline.
