Plenty for mom to do

SCIPIO - Maybe it's some flowers or breakfast-in-bed - the perfect way to show moms everywhere that husbands and children care on Mother's Day.

But for many, that also includes taking mom out to breakfast.

Across the county, numerous Mother's Day breakfasts were held.

At the Scipio Volunteer Fire Department, the cooking started bright and early as the doors opened at 7:30 a.m. to a rush of area residents eager to dig in.

Sharon Pettit, a lieutenant with the department and treasurer, said that this is one of four pancake breakfasts the department hosts throughout the year, including one on Super Bowl Sunday.

But the Mother's Day breakfast might well be the best attended of them all.

“They are really well received,” Pettit said. “It is really good to see the support we get for all of these. We've been really busy already today and we will probably be pretty busy all day.”

The department was filled and volunteer servers were running around with endless plates of pancakes, sausage and eggs.

The Scipio breakfast differs at least slightly from many of the other breakfasts in the area. Along with being one of the few that offer French toast, the department's breakfast is also all you can eat.

“I think people enjoy having a little variety,” Pettit said. “And it is all you can eat. Most people will have one plate and be filled up, but it is nice to have a little more if you are still hungry.”

It is the attention to detail and the extra mile that the Scipio Department takes that makes so many happy to spend a Sunday morning eating there.

Patrick and Melissa Morrissey, of Scipio, came out with their three daughters Chelsea, Erin and Allie to celebrate Mother's Day.

“It is really good,” Patrick said. “They are the only place that will make the eggs how you like them, not just scrambled, which is nice and they have really good food.”

All the girls agreed that the French toast was a nice touch.

“I really enjoyed it,” Melissa said. “It is really good food and a really nice way to spend Mother's Day.”

The funds raised from the breakfast help support the department's funding according to Pettit, who was impressed by the turnout for this year's breakfast.

In Auburn, the Elk's Lodge was also hosting its own breakfast. Alongside the usual eggs, toast and sausage, they also offered their own unique twist with lasagna.

But the Elk's had another unique way of approaching their breakfast.

“All ladies are free on Mother's Day,” said Jean Garropy, cook and exalted ruler of the lodge. “And we charge very little for men. We just want people to be able to come out and enjoy themselves while they are here and have a nice breakfast.”

Mother's Day breakfast has been a long-standing tradition at the lodge on State Street.

From Garropy's point of view, the reason for this is at least two fold.

“The camaraderie,” Garropy said. “It is a very fraternal sort of thing. And what we raise we put towards the kids fund. We use that to put on Christmas parties and things like that or to get money to families in need of money.”

The spirit of community at the lodge was an attraction for many.

“They are nice people,” Tim Walsh, of Auburn, said. “They have done a really nice job putting this together.”

The breakfast was a good reason to stop for many who were going to the breakfast for the first time.

“Some friends of ours just left here and said it was good,” said Terrie Ganley, of Auburn. “So we thought it would be a good idea to stop and I'm really happy we did.”
