AURORA - Each spring, Laurie Roberts looks forward to working in her garden. And, each year one of her favorite spots to shop for her garden needs is the Aurora Free Library's annual spring book and plant sale.
“I have been thinking about the sale for a week. No, I have actually been thinking about it for a month,” she said while shopping for various plants and herbs during the sale held at the library Saturday morning. “I come every year, I just can't get enough. I love our library and like to do what I can to help.”
According to the library board president Cameron Taylor, the book and plant sale is one of the largest fundraisers for the library. Proceeds from the sale with be placed in the general account fund to help with annual budget costs of the library.
Various herbs and plants were donated to the sale by area nurseries and private gardeners.
The books are donated by area residents, as well as taken from the older collections from the library's shelves to make room for newly purchased books.
“Many people will donate their winter reading material,” Taylor said. “The sale is a good way to stock up on spring reading.”
Cameron said that although most of the heavy lifting and other chores associated with the sale are completed in one day, the sale itself takes about two months of planning each year.
“We have a completely new board this year,” he said. “And they are all such a great group of people. Today's sale is apparent of that.”
Many people could not wait for the sale to begin and began to shop more than a half hour before the scheduled opening time.
Books leftover from the sale will be donated to the annual book sale held at the Finger Lakes Mall, according to Taylor. Taylor said that the month of May has been a busy one for the library and its guests with many activities and events taking place.
The library will be holding an adults-only fundraiser on May 17. The fourth annual Food for the Palate & the Mind will feature appetizers and desserts prepared by local chefs, as well as wine tastings with local wineries.
