Blue Devils clinch share of title

Mike Drake picked up his first win of the year for the Moravia baseball team in a 10-6 win over Groton Saturday. The win helped assure the Blue Devils at least a share of the IAC title.
Drake went four innings, sitting five batters down on strikes, walking three, and allowing three hits and two runs. After walking the first batter in the seventh inning, Drake struck out the rest of the batters.

The Blue Devils down 6-4 heading into the seventh but went on to score six runs in the inning.

Justin Stanton got the start for the Blue Devils going three innings, stiking out four, walking five, giving up four hits and allowing three earned runs. At the plate, he hit a solo home run and picked up another base hit while finishing the day with two RBIs. Eric Youngs was 3-for-4 with two doubles, giving him nine on the year, and Jeremy Stewart also had two hits with two RBIs.

Moravia awaits the two games played by Groton and Marathon to decide the division.

Moravia (11-7 overall, 9-4 in league and 8-2 in division) travels to Spencer-Van Etten Monday.

Port Byron 7, Skaneateles 2

Tab Carmon led the Panthers with three hits, a triple and an RBI. Matt Janusz, Jake Bennett and Dan Jefferds had two hits also. Bennett had a triple and a team-high two RBIs. Jefferds also had a double with one RBI.

Kent Pitcher started the game going two innings, striking out two and allowing one run. Bennett came in and went four strong innings, striking out one and giving up three hits. Janusz pitched one inning and struck out one.

The Lakers' Devlen Murphy had a double and Zack Augustine had one hit while also knocking a run in.

Port Byron (6-7) travels to Cato-Meridian Monday.

SOFTBALL

Phoenix Tournament

Phoenix 9, Skaneateles 1

The Lakers' Alex Hughes started the first game, going two innings, sitting one down on strikes, while allowing four hits and four runs. Zoey Hilpl came in and pitched the rest of the game, allowing eight hits and five runs. At the plate she had one hit and one RBI. Terry Blessing, Kate Driscoll and Erica Tardiff both had one hit.

Cazenovia 5, Skaneateles 2

Skaneateles was left hitless by Cazenovia, but Zoey Hilpl pitched a complete game striking out one, scattering seven hits and giving up five runs.

Kate Driscoll, Jackie Stucker and Terry Blessing were named to the all-tournament team.

Skaneateles (3-11 overall, 3-9 league) travels to Jordan-Elbridge Monday.

BOYS GOLF

Union Springs 426, fifth

The Wolves participated in the Whitesboro Tournament in which they played 18 holes instead of the usual nine at Hidden Valley Golf Course. Michael Bean and Matt Cuff both shot an 82. Eric Hylwa carded an 84 and B.J. O'Hara ended his day with an 89. Tim Morabito finished with a 91 and Austin Thomas had a 94.

Union Springs travels to Groton Monday.

GIRLS GOLF

Union Springs 512, fourth

Stephanie Morse led the Wolves with a 100 at Hidden Valley Golf Course. Jamie Pearce came in with a 115 for the day as they played 18 holes.

The Wolves travel to Soaring Eagles Tuesday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Jordan-Elbridge 14, Christian Brothers Acedemy 13

Kate Austin led the Eagles with five goals, while Emily Dillon had three assists and four goals. Kate Dungey had a hat trick along with two assists and Marge Bailey had two goals. Allison Donahue had two assists and Hanne Bailey had one assist.

Kelsey Richardson led the Eagles with 13 saves and Ashley Humphreys had five saves.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Southern Cayuga, 26 points, eighth

Jon Mosher, Stephen Townsend, Antonio Rejman and Evan Bassett finished second in the sprint medley relay (3:49.8) Friday. Mosher, Townsend, Rejman and J.D. Tyrrell finished fourth in the 4x100m relay (46.3).

Ryan Barta, Joe Troy, Andrew Dean and Griffon Farlow ended up taking sixth in the distance medley relays (12:15.7). Lucas Schonfeld and Sam Ayers finished sixth in the triple jump relays (66-6). Tyrrell and Schonfeld took sixth in the high jump (10-2).

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Southern Cayuga, 21 points, ninth

Miriam Larson-Koester and Allyson Murphy took first in the shot put relay (54-1.5) Friday. Miriam also set a new school record with a throw of 33-6. Larson-Koester and Nellie Slocum finished first in the discus relay (171-11).

Emily Heslop, Nicole Hoey, Theresa Miller and Megan Lawrence placed sixth in the 4x100m relay (56.4) while Heslop, Ella Pearson, Hoey and Miller came in sixth for the sprint medley relay (4:52.8).

Southern Cayuga hosts Union Springs and Marathon Wednesday.
