Our View: Hits & Misses

HIT: To the Weedsport Central School District, for allowing high school student Caitlin Green to have a ceremonial graduation at home so her mother could see it before she died of colon cancer.
Sometimes, high school commencement ceremonies can become complicated events, but the Weedsport district deserves praise for making the right decision in allowing a family to have a special moment.

We offer our condolences to the family and congratulations to Caitlin on her achievement, one that will always have great meaning because of the circumstances.

MISS: To the ever-increasing price of gasoline as Memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer nears. With gas creeping up to $4 a gallon, it's frightening to think how this is going to impact the local economy.

People will take fewer trips, eat out less and buy fewer consumer goods.

Summer is supposed to be the best time of the year, this one may go down as one of the worst, at least in terms of the economy.

HIT: To Dale Bush, an Auburn resident, who had a lucky week, when he won $25,000 in a contest sponsored by a bank. Beating one-in-18 million odds, Bush said it was “overwhelming” to win such a grand prize. The money will go to good use, as Bush said he will use some of it to help fund his son's mission to Africa.

HIT: To East Middle School students in Rebecca Moshaty's art class. The seventh-graders are taking items that would usually be thrown out and making works of art out of them.

It's part of the school's recycling initiative which teaches students about taking care of the environment.

It may be a new approach but it's a good idea that today's students are growing up with a better understanding how important it is to take care of the world they will inherit.
