It's official.
Ranked eighth in New York State, the Southern Cayuga softball team clinched its division by beating Groton for the second time this season, 19-0 on Friday.
With the big win, the Chiefs advance to 10-0 in the division for the first time in the team's history.
Groton's one loss on the season, to Southern Cayuga - by a 12-0 score - put them in second place, but the season sweep put an Indians division title out of reach.
“This is really great,” Chiefs coach Dave Hewitt said. “I'm so happy for the girls, they really deserve it.”
The Chiefs have allowed just six runs in divisional play, and nine runs all season en route to a 15-0 record.
Lianna May and Julie Hewitt have pitched seven shutouts, 7 one-run games and just one 2-run contest all year.
Minimal errors have contributed to their success thus far as well.
On Friday, May pitched a complete game one hitter, with seven strikeouts.
At the plate, Lindsey Doeing went a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple and 3 RBIs. May ripped three hits, including a double and a triple, while Julie Hewitt scored 3 RBIs on a double and triple. Jessica Curry also belted three hits, with 3 RBIs, while Felicia Allen, Beth Rocker and Audriana Murray each had two of the team's 19 total hits. Kayla Hildrith (triple) and Kim Willis each chipped in with a hit as well.
With a playoff bye secured, the Chiefs will head to Tioga Monday - a game that won't be as easy. Tioga came the closest to beating the Chiefs this season, but Southern Cayuga prevailed in a 2-1 win.
