The Use It or Lose It contest has reached the halfway point with another weigh-in occurring this past Wednesday. Lots of teams are doing well with four of the seven teams pretty much neck-and-neck in total weight loss. Those four teams are all hovering around 30 points of total weight loss.
As far as individuals go, it is anyone#'s guess with approximately 10 people having a large weight loss. It is so interesting to have the participants come in and talk about what they are doing to keep themselves motivated and work toward their goals. They are all an inspiration and I want to congratulate them.

Keep up the good work and keep exercising!

Amy Pedley reports that our first annual Bowl A Thon this past Sunday was a huge success, with everyone having a lot of fun and great prizes being offered. Everyone was fighting over the auction item of a side table, which had golf clubs as its legs, donated by Lynch's furniture. It was perfect for the event and also for the season.

Mike Danyluk who works in our maintenance department was the lucky winner for that. There were also 50-50 drawings throughout the day and many free giveaways.

The Auburn YMCA-WEIU had a group of members from the senior fitness class who participated in the Bowl A Thon. They affectionately refer to themselves as the Y-Ettes and are known to play a mean game of basketball here at the Y. They are also the movers and shakers for our Adult Day at Camp Y-Owasco as well as for many little field trips that we go on.

Five of the members of this class not only bowled but cheered on the children that bowled first. They also provided a lot of entertainment when they were bowling.

Congratulations to these bowlers: Sylvia Davis, Mary Ann Finn, Joyce North, Betty Thurston and Nancy Cowan. Sylvia was the big winner with a score of 94. Betty, who is Sylvia's sister, followed with a score of 85. Mary Ann had 85, Nancy had a 69 and Joyce finished with a 66, for a grand team total of 404. Their fellow class participants sponsored these five bowlers.

We thank them for their support as well as the support of the Y-ettes who are willing to participate in extracurricular activities here at the YMCA. They exemplify our values, especially caring. Because of these women, my job is a lot more enjoyable and I am happy they are a part of our membership.

The weather has teased us this week. We certainly thought summer was right around the corner but I think we still need to experience more spring. For me and Steve Komanecky, May means a time of turning our attention to the Soap Box Derby. Steve especially is focused on making sure that this year's event is the best ever.

The city is working hard with us to make sure everything is prepared on the roads for the big day. And Upstate Paving with Tim LoCastro and his crew are working hard on the blacktop of East Genesee Street so it will be ready for the soap box cars to run on Saturday, May 24. Now, we only have to hope that the weather cooperates and everything runs smoothly.

Hansinger is the assistant fitness director at the YMCA-WEIU.
