Fun fare

The Expansion For All Project will be hosting a Family Fun Fare and Kids Festival to raise money for the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Auburn.
Kathy Hribick, a parent coordinator for the school's Expansion For All Project, said the money was needed for new desks, computers, library upgrades, a gym and new kindergarten room.

In the past, the children have had to walk to St. Hyacinth's Church two blocks away to use the a gym.

“It's hard on the little ones to walk year-round in the rain and the snow,” Hribick said. “The library has books from the '40s and '50s and the desks are falling apart around them as they sit.”

While other Catholic schools in the area get assistance from the local churches, Hribick said her school is completely self-sustained outside of the church members.

“Our parishioners are great but they can't keep flipping the bill,” Hribick said. “That's why we decided to do this event.”

The event started as a small fair and has grown into a large festival as members of the community continue to offer their services.

The festival will have live music and performances by groups such as the Reva Jammers, Agogi Martial Arts and Nine Mile Creek, among several others who have all volunteered their time and services.

Hribick said the Auburn Fire Department will bring a truck to the festival, the Auburn Police will have a child safety seat inspection area and the Cayuga County Sheriff's Department will register children with the Operation Safe Child ID system.

“The community has come out in droves,” Hribick said. “Something that was going to be small has turned into a large event because the community is out there supporting us.”

Adding to the size of the event, Hribick said there will be several rides for children of various ages. On Saturday, children will be able to purchase a three-hour, all-you-can-ride ticket for $10 instead of paying $2 a ride.

Other events will include raffles, a cake wheel, face painting, crafts and carnival food.

“This is geared towards a family event,” Hribick said. “I think the community is looking forward to the family festival. There's a lot for people who don't want to spend a lot of money and just want a nice place to take their kids for the day.”

Hribick said the school wants to raise $500,000 to put towards upgrades and renovations. While not all of that money will come from this festival, she hoped they could raise a good amount to put towards the total.

The school previously held a Christmas Bazaar last December, which saw an attendance of nearly 2,000 people.

“People are already asking if we are going to do (the bazaar) again,” Hribick said. “I'm hoping and assuming this will be a large event too.”
