This is why I am running for Auburn school board

Thursday, May 8, 2008 12:01 PM EDT

I am running for the Auburn school board for the second time and I will let you know where I stand on some of the issues.
I support the turf. I feel it is a win/win for the whole community, not just the athletes.

When there are games played here in Auburn and these games make it difficult for families to get back home, they will stay in our motels.

They will be eating at our restaurants and taking advantage of some of the culture that our beautiful city holds.

More than just football can be played on this turf as well. We also will be able to rent out time on this turf to other schools and colleges. This capital project money is for the restoration of Holland Stadium and the other schools.

If we don't use this grant, it will be gone and we won't get the chance for it again. Holland Stadium needs to be back to the gem is was before with a few updates. As stated in the movie “Field of Dreams,” “If you build it, they will come.”

As for the dropout rate, we need to make it so our children enjoy going to school and get the education they need to make a good life for them and their children.

One thing that I think that would be a good idea is if there are students struggling with the regents why not let them get out of the regents classes and take the non-regents classes.

Not all children can handle the intensity of the regents classes. And I feel it is better for our children to graduate with a regular diploma than that they drop out because they are frustrated with trying to keep up.

The school within a school is a good idea, but I hope that by focusing on a few we don't lose track of the rest.

I would like the opportunity to be able to help with these issues that we face in this district. I don't have all of those degrees that the other candidates have but I have a good heart and I want you to know that I will do everything in my power to try and help our children and the families in this community. I will fight for what's right and not be a yes man.

" Where does auburn get these people? Do you have to get a degree in making poor decisions for a community. It baffles me with this turf thing. I can't see where putting turf will draw extra revenue. What happens in 8-10 years when the field is junk again? Then who pays for it? That will be when all of the supporters for turf turn their backs and say that it isn't their problem and put it to a vote for the tax payers once again. If these same people put that much desire into reading, writing and math then we would be the best school district in the State. Instead we having struggling schools and a red flagged middle school. Yet put turf in behind the school that is one of the worst academically in many categories. All I can say is wow! Once again our children have been lost! "

" Yes, there are non-regents diplomas. Can't remember what they call them, but they exist. "

" great idea HillbillY!!
Where I live from ages 16-18 a parent can REVOKE their childs license at any time for No reason! I made sure my kids knew that--stated very clearly from DMV worker the day I signed allowing them to get one! "

" I'm definetly voting no for this guy just like I did last time. To be fair cm I don't think board members are paid.

I think you can get either a general or regents diploma. Which I think is fine, we need laborers as much as we need educated workers. "

" Ernie, “Field of Dreams” was a grass field. NO to turf, use the money to build a windmill and save the tax payer money. The windmill is a green idea and the kids can learn the new technology first hand. Another win/win. As for the Regents classes. Last I knew the State requires all kids to get a regents diploma, unless they are special ed. Has this changed again where the school can give out diplomas without the kids passing the regents? Just wondering.

As for the dropout rate, try this idea. No diploma, no N.Y. State Drivers License. Kids can still get their license but, if they drop out the license is automatically revoked. To get the license back they need to Graduate or get a GED. If they get the GED there will be an additional one time fee for the license of $100. Along with completing the entire licensing process, which includes all the normal fees, again. All fees paid the first time before the student dropped out would be forfeited. And don't say a drivers license is a right, because it is not. It is a privilege granted by the State of N.Y. The same state that will be giving the diploma. These are two things kids should have to earn, a diploma and a license. "

" I can strongly say I will tell all my family and friends living in Auburn to vote NO for you!!

Are you seriously trying to convince me that TURF will bring in tourism?
Will there be a blinding snowstorm in JULY that will force teams to stay at our hotels and eat our restaurants?
Are you trying to state TURF will change the student drop-out rate?
You have GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

Last I knew there are NOT JUST regents classes offered at the High school or at ANY high school.. The issue is you choose ignore TEACHING & LEARNING! You're stating the school should LOWER its standards for the "not want to" learners!
Well HECK why not just give them a diploma at 5th grade graduation! and be done with them!!!!
I took all regents classes and I disliked them too! BUT it did not deter me from graduating with my class.
Yes it WAS more work, extra studying, less time for fun, BUT it taught me be "go farther, push myself harder, never give up" NOT take the easy way out!

You should have NEVER wrote this editorial-for I am sure many other voters will see--you are NOT in it for the education of children--you are in it for the TURF and the PAY!!!
NO VOTE FOR YOU!!!!!!! "

" You support the turf, Ernie?
Thanks for your honesty--and I will honestly vote against you for that one reason alone. "
