Auburn could make money from garbage

The city could be taking trash from area businesses - for a price.
Auburn City Council will vote Thursday on a proposed resolution allowing 12 companies and municipalities to dispose of solid waste in the city landfill. If the resolution is passed, the city will charge varying rates for use of the landfill ranging between approximately $40 and $130 per ton.

The proposal estimates that the city will gain more than $2 million in revenue from the waste contracts. All but three of the entities listed as part of the resolution were allowed to use the landfill last year.

The vote will take place during City Council's business meeting, which starts 6 p.m at City Hall on South Street. The meeting will also include a session for public to be heard on any topic.

During the meeting, councilors are also scheduled to vote on resolutions authorizing bids on a program for replacing sidewalks and curb and the 2008 Road Improvement Program.

" An anerobic digester or a plasma arc furnace should be used at the dump. "

" Please urge your council members to not spend this money, but put it in a fund to take care of eventually closing the dump. The EPA will not allow this dump to operate forever. At some time it will be ordered closed. The cost will be millions. Don't let the politicians spend this money or your children and grandchildren will be paying a huge price in the future. Politicians do not plan for the future. "

The City of Auburn should out source trash collection to the private sector ... you lower costs, lowers liability, removes capital expense and can get a few $$ per ton.

The Fire department should also go volunteer, bigger cities than Auburn have volunteer fire departments ... the City rents existing facilities and trucks.

These things are not draconian, they do take leadership.
