The state Department of Environmental Conservation is proposing to make its ban on open burning of residential wastes statewide.
The DEC said the measure would reduce pollution and reduce wildfire risk. Currently, open burning is banned in cities and villages, and towns with populations above 20,000.
Exceptions to the statewide ban include camp fires, prescribed burns, celebratory bonfires, fire training exercises, specialized burning to protect crops from frostbite and burning of certain agricultural wastes.
The state will conduct a series of public hearings on the proposal, with the closest locally taking place from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 23, at the Cortlandville Fire Department, 999 Route 13, Cortland.
Comments can be mailed to: NYSDEC, Division of Air Resources, Attention: Robert Stanton, 625 Broadway, Albany NY 12233-3254.
