Pleasant Rowland has sold MacKenzie-Childs Ltd., the Aurora-based home furnishings company she purchased in 2001.
The philanthropist and American Girl founder said Twin Lakes Capital, a private equity firm, has bought the business. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

MacKenzie-Childs employees learned about the sale Wednesday morning.

Rowland had disclosed plans to seek a buyer for the company in June 2007.

MacKenzie-Childs has retail locations in Aurora, Palm Beach and New York City. The company started in 1983.

" The reality is that the Inn was boarded up and the physical plant was in terrible repair. Were I a perspective student at Wells, I wouldn't have considered coming here with absolutely no amenities in the Village. That was the situation whether I agree or not with how the buildings and businesses were handled. Would the College have Invested in a total renovation? I have no way of knowing what the Trustees long range plans were or are. But the animosity displayed here and throughout any project planning doesn't present any solutions..... "

" How many local people work at MacKenzie Childs NOW? How many people worked there when Richard and Victoria ran it? If Pleasant is such a remarkable woman how could "so few" derail her plans? What were her plans? How do you know that the people who refused to play along with her were unwilling to care about the community at large? Why did she give up so easily? Did she ever tell the truth? Do you think that bothered people? Do you think it is "so few'? Or do you think she intimidated people with her swaggering vengence into keeping their mouths shut? Is she really gone? How do you know? Is Mack-Cheese really profitable? Do you really like Pleasant or do you only like sucking money out of her? "

" What Pleasant Rowland did with Mackenzie-Childs was one of the very, very few positive things that egotistical woman ever did for Aurora. The rest of her activities here would be better described as what she did TO Aurora, not what she did FOR us. Her legacy is a community turned against itself and a college saddled once again with unprofitable businesses like millstones around the neck. Aurora Resident too! "

" This is a sad day for our area and those of us who care about the jobs Pleasant Rowland saved by making MacKenzie Childs profitable. We hate to see her give up each property and the projects she could have achieved in the future. Our village is nuch more vibrant now in spite of the individuals who made it impossible either by their behavior or imcompetance for her to continue. It is amazing how so few can undermine any change because of their unwillingness to care about the community at large. People need work and these projects provide work....Aurora Resident "
