Coaches Vs. Cancer is a national non-profit organization established by the American Cancer Society about 25 years ago.
Since then, the ACS has worked with the National Association of Basketball Coaches to help sports fans and their communities find a cure for the dreaded disease.
And coaches of other sports are joining in the battle as well.
On Tuesday, May 6, the boys' lacrosse game pitting rivals Skaneateles and Marcellus high schools will feature “Stick it to Cancer,” a fundraising event for Coaches Vs. Cancer presented by the Skaneateles High School marketing class.
The affair will include a pre-game tailgating party, prize drawings, a silent auction and other activities held throughout the game.
Though it may seem odd for a class dedicated to learning about business to be working with a non-profit organization, SHS business teacher T.J. Fraher said the results are the same in the end.
“Well, business is about making money. So the idea is to ‘market' something - in this case the lacrosse game - and raise money at it, which we'll donate to an organization,” he added.
A group of students attended a Skaneateles Merchants meeting to tell them about sponsorship opportunities.
A large part of the event will be a silent auction, which will feature dozens of sports-related items donated by schools and organizations from across the nation.
Auction items include a Hall of Fame basketball autographed by Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim and a U.S. Army lacrosse jersey autographed by coach Jack Emmer.
In addition, a raffle will be held, and will include merchandise like signed posters from both the 2008 SU men's and women's lacrosse teams, as well as lacrosse apparel donated by numerous area colleges.
The students set up a display case in the high school to exhibit the items the class collected.
The tailgating party, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will feature a Bounce House and face-painting, and the marketing class will hold other activities during the game itself at 7:30.
“This will be a great, hands-on project,” Fraher said. “We've taken what we've learned and now we're applying it.”
