The New York State Fair has announced a nearly complete list of artists scheduled to play free concerts at Chevy Court during the 2008 fair, including a full day devoted to regional bands from throughout upstate New York.
Performers appearing this year range from hard-hitting rock legends to familiar country bands, chart-topping soul vocalists and modern swing and alternative rock groups.
The list includes hard rockers Ted Nugent and Joan Jett, '70s soul group The Spinners, pop vocalist Eddie Money, swing musicians Asleep at the Wheel and Royal Crown Revue, the Christian rock band Flyleaf and a stable of country-influenced groups like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and The Outlaws.
It also includes, for the first-time, a day of regional music including bands from Syracuse, Rochester, Albany, Buffalo and Binghamton.
“It runs the gamut,” said Jim Horsman, events coordinator for entertainment at Chevy Court and the Stan Colella stage, in a press release. “You have just about every genre from classic rock to fairly new, progressive artists. It's a nice variety.”
The 10 performers announced this week cover all but one day of the fair, which has not yet been finalized. This year's lineup is:
Asleep at the Wheel, Thursday, Aug. 21 - This Texas country band has become a legend since it formed in 1970, seeking to prove the slogan, “Western Swing Ain't Dead, it's Asleep at the Wheel.” It's won nine Grammy awards and has collaborated with artists ranging from Bob Dylan to Dolly Parton. The Spinners, Friday, Aug. 22 - This classic vocal quintet danced across the top of the soul, rhythm 'n' blues and pop charts during the 1970s, with hits that included
“Rubberband Man,” “Mighty Love,” “Then Came You,” “I'll be Around” and “One of a Kind (Love Affair).” The group has had 12 gold records and six Grammy nominations. (thespinnersmusic.com)
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Saturday, Aug. 23 -Joan Jett has been playing a hard-edged brand of pop music since the late '70s, blasting out songs like “I Love Rock and Roll” and “Crimson and Clover.” She's also appeared in movies, television shows and starred in the Broadway version of “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” (joanjett.com)
The Outlaws, Sunday, Aug. 24 - This guitar-driven band was a standout player in the Southern Rock movement of the 1970s, producing hits like “Green Grass and High Tides”

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Monday, Aug. 25 - These California-born, Grammy-winning folk rockers first hit the pop charts in 1967. The band's hits included “Mr. Bojangles,” “Buy for Me the Rain” and “I Saw the Light.” In addition, the group was comedian Steve Martin's band for his million-selling novelty single “King Tut.” In recent decades, they have had frequent success on the country charts. Eddie Money, Tuesday, Aug. 26 - This rock 'n' roll singer and songwriter had a string of Top 40 hits and platinum records in the '70s and '80s. His most familiar tunes include
“Take Me Home Tonight,” “Baby Hold On,” “Two Tickets to Paradise,” “Shakin'” and “Think I'm in Love.” He's appeared on the sitcom “The King of Queens” and the MTV show “Rock the Cradle,” where his singer daughter, Jesse, is featured. (eddiemoney.com)
Poco, Wednesday, Aug. 27 - This pioneering country rock band, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, has released a total of 50 albums had a handful of Top 20 hits.

Ted Nugent, Thursday, Aug. 28 The self-proclaimed guitar wild man has been touring with his high energy act since hitting the charts with hard-rock anthems like “Cat Scratch Fever,” “Wango Tango” and “Journey to the Center of the Mind.” (tednugent.com)
Royal Crown Revue, Friday, Aug. 29 - This jazz band, which plays a modern style of classic American music, has been credited with starting the swing revival movement. It was the club band in the Jim Carrey movie, “The Mask,” and performed with Bette Midler. (rcr.com)

Regional bands, Sunday, Aug. 31 - Five popular regional bands will play throughout the day. The specific bands playing have not yet been released.
Flyleaf, Monday, Sept. 1 - This rock group, which features strong female vocalist Lacey Mosley, has had success as both a Christian band and mainstream rock performer.
Flyleaf's music can be heard on the soundtracks of the movies “Live Free or Die Hard” and “Resident Evil: Extinction.” They will play a single, 8 p.m. show. A 4 p.m. act has yet to be booked.
