SARATOGA SPRINGS - One worker was hospitalized and five others were slightly injured Thursday when a barn under renovation collapsed at Saratoga Race Course.
Saratoga Springs Fire Chief Robert Cogan said firefighters pulled the most seriously injured worker from under Barn No. 50 after it collapsed at the Oklahoma Training Track, across the street from the main thoroughbred track.
Six track carpenters were lifting the barn on jacks when its weight shifted and it toppled onto its side around 8:30 a.m., said Charlie Wheeler, Saratoga facilities manager for the New York Racing Association.
One of the workers suffered a broken arm and was taken by helicopter to Albany Medical Center. The five others suffered cuts and scrapes and were treated at the scene.
Wheeler said the workers, all NYRA employees, were installing walls in the barn when the accident happened.
There were no horses in the barn at the time.
The renovation work was part of an ongoing barn restoration project at the 144-year-old track, where many of the barns are more than a century old.
Wheeler said the barn that collapsed was assigned to trainer Gary Contessa. The barn will be rebuilt in six-to-eight weeks, he said.
