Vote yes for turf at Holland Stadium

Saturday, May 3, 2008 11:16 PM EDT

In the next few weeks we are going to be asked to vote for or against a $15 million facilities improvement project for Auburn public schools. This project includes improvements to our buildings, our classrooms and our athletic facilities.
This is a great opportunity to upgrade our schools and give our teachers and students the tools they need to compete in a rapidly changing and technologically advanced world. Let's face it folks, we need to invest in our children.

We need to embrace the future by preparing for it!

For those of you who are worried about the cost and safety of an artificial playing surface at Holland Stadium, you can set those worries aside. The people's share of the cost has been raised. It will cost you nothing! The turf is already paid for and over time the turf will allow us to play more and cost less to maintain.

The athletic department has been researching the safety issues and has found the issues that are of concern are not based on scientific facts. Concerns are based on old style turf installed a decade or so ago under conditions that exist on planets that revolve around the sun much closer than our own.

Voting yes for this project would be a great step forward for our community. Please vote yes.

" Anonymoose how can you read a post and get a different conclusion than the rest of the world? Do you have a learning disability? I could get you help if you need it. "

" nature, from what I understand: 80% is coming from a state/federal grant. the other 20% is private monies. Due to grant monies being used is has to be voted on.
JLmorgan knows more than I in this area-is this how it works JL? "

" They only raised a small portion of the money, thinking that would appease the tax payers. Nice. So, if the turf does get approved, where will these people be in 8-10 years when that turf needs to be replaced?? Nowhere to be found. And will there be a state grant to cover the cost as well?? Not hardly. It will cost the tax payers millions of dollars to replace that turf then. But what about natural grass?? We have it there in place right now! How will it be in 8-10 years?? Still sitting there growing. Will we have to replace it then?? NO!!! "

" I posed this question last week and never rec'd a response. Why is the turf still in the overall budget if they raised the money privately? Does anyone know? "

" Why is it so important to construct such an elaborate field for KIDS to play on, anyway?? It's just a game!! It's not worth spending millions on. You "pro turf" people need to come back to reality. It's something we do not need, nor do we want it. We already told you that 2 years ago. "

" All I can say is wow! I wish our schools could get advocates for our childrens education that felt that strong about things. I am a very sports minded person and workout 6 times a week. I personally think that it is a joke! Look at the stadium it needs fixing before it needs turf. What really needs fixing is the Auburn Enlarged School District. The wrong people are in the wrong places making the wrong decisions for helpless children who can't make decisions for themselves. I don't think turf will help our children grow and get good job and away from the 20 pharmacies that we have in town. I do not think turf will help get them into a good college. I do not think turf will help get us new teachers and better pay the current ones. Enough said. "

" Definately no to turf. I don't want to pay for the replacement down the road. Take the money they the people collected & make the necessary repairs to the stadium, and maintain the grass field. We are minipulated by the turf sales force, because the NFL is all set for what they need. We need to tell them no too. If enough communities say no to turf, the money will end up back where is should have been in the first place, going toward education, and the neecessary support for that. This turf agenda is crazy. Besides, we ALREADY said no once. What is it going to take to get through to these people????? "

" Hate to say it, anonymous, but you said it best--a "jock" arguing for turf--it's like an elephant arguing for peanuts! LOL!
Forrest, also--what a simple but astute observation--"people have been playing sports on grass for years"--DUH?!?! Absolutely right!
The scary thing is, is that these "Pro-turfers" are displaying the type of mentality that if they were (Dog forbid) elected to a position of Power, would just completely ignore the wishes of the voters and public majority, and ram this expensive, unnecessary "pork barrel" project down all of our throats!
We must be VIGILANT in assuring that NONE of them ever get the opportunity to do so!!!!! "

" I say no to Turf. However, I did hear a very good idea on the radio the other day. If the school system really wants to help the tax payer, take the money for the improvement project and put it towards some wind power generators to help in powering the schools and providing lights for events. I heard this on the Jim Reeves show on 570 WSYR. A project like this will pay the tax payer back in electrical cost savings for the school system. But, this is a good idea, no one will want to do it. " Considering the economic conditions and the impact it is having on the consumers I cannot support the "WISH LIST" spending proposals. It is way too costly. Concession stands, press boxes, turf and parking lots are low on the priority list compared to the cost of food and gas. Average American families all over this country are having trouble finding the money to fill their gas tanks just to get to work. One would think that the l0ocal board of education would look at economic conditions PRIOR to placing any spending proposal on the ballot. One would think they would look at the BIG picture, instead they continue on with business as usual. I also realize Mr Pabis is making $199,000 a year and the impact at the gas station truly doesn't effect him, however, the people he is asking this additional money from are making FAR LESS than he is and they have families to feed, house, and keep warm in the winter. This is the bigger picture Mr Pabis, this is what you and your bobble head board are either missing or ignoring.
I will VOTE NO! "

" This turf is not going to keep the young here after they graduate from high school, its not going to bring jobs here, its not going to lower taxes, its not going to bring tourist here, and in the future it will probably raise our taxes in someway. People have been playing sports on grass for many many years and it always served its purpose. There are other places in the school budget for this money. In the long run who is going to continue to pay for this? Unemployment is what 5% and going up, more people are moving out of Auburn, than in, and the only ones that are staying are the cons that are released from the prison. "
