HIT: To the Auburn High School boys lacrosse team for its first victory over West Genesee on Tuesday night.
The Maroons have made giant strides as a lacrosse program over the past 15 years. The team has sent numerous players to Division I, II and III colleges and, most notably, won the Section III championship in 2001.
But as all central New York lacrosse fans know, the West Genesee Wildcats are the program to measure up to. Since the mid-1970s, the Maroons had always found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard against the Wildcats.
On Tuesday, in Camillus, the Auburn boys lacrosse team won a game for the ages and gave their fans a memory that will last a lifetime.
MISS: To a possible impact on the benefits of retired volunteer firefighters in Skaneateles. The struggling economy might affect a fund that helps the retired firefighters.
No one wants to see anyone's benefits cut, especially those of volunteers who put their lives on the line to help their community.
HIT: To the nine women honored this week as Women of Distinction by the Girl Scouts-Seven Lakes Council.
The women were recognized for distinguishing themselves on a daily basis at work, home and in the community. They are great role models for young girls in the community.
HIT: To the volunteers that help local food pantries. In times when a faltering economy and a rising unemployment rate are hurting families, it is heartwarming to see there are people in our community that give of their time to help those less fortunate.
Food pantries will sadly be needed more than ever over the coming months and it's good to know they are staffed with people that want to make a difference.
If you want to help the hungry in your community and aren't able to volunteer, you can still make a important contribution by donating non-perishable food items to a local food pantry.
