Sweetman qualifies for sectionals; Blue Devils cruise to win

Wes Sweetman qualified for the Section III championships in the 400m with a time of 55.9 for the Cato-Meridian boys track and field team on Wednesday. The Blue Devils defeated Manlius Pebble Hill, 113-28.
Sweetman also had first place finishes as a member of the 4x100m relay team (48.2) and the 4x400m relay team (4:05.9). The other members of the 4x100m relay team included Joe Bowden, John Murphy and Ivan Rojo. Rojo was also a leg of the 4x400m relay team with Sweetman, Bowden and Murphy.Rojo earned his third first place finish as a part of the 4x800m relay team (10:14) helping the Blue Devils sweep the relays with Ben Mesmer, Tom Klaben and Joe Mattice. Klaben also won the long jump (14-10) and the high jump (5-4). Mesmer recorded another win in the 3200m (11:37.3).

Recording another two first place finishes for the Blue Devils was Mattice in the 1600m (5:31.7) and the 800m (2:17.4).

Andrew Gillis had the most personal wins for the Blue Devils with first place finishes in the 100m (11.9), the 200m (24.2) and the triple jump (38-6). Bowden added another win in the pole vault (8-0).

Also winning for the Blue Devils was Mike Davison in the 100m hurdles (21.3) and AJ Rothenburg who won the shot put (37-9), which the Blue Devils swept and the discus (97-5.5).

The Blue Devils (3-1) will host their first Cato-Meridian Invitational Friday.

Port Byron 88, Bishop Grimes 46

Steve Cuff won the 400m (58.7), the triple jump (34-8) and was part of the winning 4x800m relay (9:36) and 4x400m relay (4:01). Cuff ran with Christian Cobb, Will Rice and Zac Leja in the 4x800 and with Shawn Seamans, Leja and Rice in the 4x400.

Cobb won the 1600m (5:07) and the 3200m (11:06) while Robert Yeomans took first in the shot put (37-0) and the discus (84-0).

Seamans, Ryan Eldridge, Travis Snyder and Dillon Swan won the 4x100m relay (49.5).

Eldrige took first in the long jump (15-10) and Adam Hawker won the 800m (2:27).

Westhill 102.5, Jordan-Elbridge 38.5

The Eagles had all second place finishes with Donato DiRenzo leading the way with four.

DiRenzo had a personal second place win in the 800m (2:07.7), was a leg in the second place 4x800m relay (9:05.5), the 4x100m relay (50.8) and the 4x400m relay (3:49.9) with members Jake Griffin, Nick Piedmonte and Mike Marrero.

Marrero was also a member of the 4x800m relay team with DiRenzo, Greg Bader and Jeff Donahue.

Griffin and Piedmonte were also members of the 4x100m relay team with DiRenzo and Tom Badman.

Other second place finishers for the Eagles were Griffin in the 200m (24.5) and the long jump (18-9.5), Cody Stanton in the 3200m (10:20.1), John Flynn placed second in the high jump (5-6), Dylan Kirk took second in the pole vault (8-0) and Pat Cooper finished second in the discus (101-11).

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Cato-Meridian 89, Manlius-Pebble Hill 40

Cato-Meridian 128, Syracuse Academy of Science 2

Aubrey Campbell led the Blue Devils (4-1) in the dual meet with first place finishes in the high jump (4-6) and as a leg in the 4x400m relay (5:18.7).The other members of the 4x400m relay team were Autumn Bullard, Rebecca Myers and Jessica Griffiths. Bullard was also a leg in the 4x800m relay that finished first (12:50) with Erin Annett, Jessica Brand and Myers.

Somer Stuter had two wins in the 100m hurdles (18.8) and in the triple jump (30-1).

Also winning for the Blue Devils was Tara Pickard in the 400m hurdles (84.9), Chelsea Nixon in the 800m (3:09.2), Kristin Roberts won the 3000m (13:58), Shelby Klaben finished first in the shot put (25-0) and Erin Grant recorded a win in the discus (72-10).

Jordan-Elbridge 77, Westhill 58

Jordan-Elbridge 81, Christian Brothers Academy 56

Katie Darling led the Eagles with three first place finishes, winning the long jump (15-10), the triple jump (33-6.5) and taking first as a leg in the 4x400m relay (4:25.3).

The other members of the 4x400m relay team were Kim Foltz, Maggie Nuber and Lyndsay Hollis. Hollis also won the 400m hurdles (69.9).

The other winners for the Eagles were Nicole Darling in the 3000m (11;51.2) and Eloise Rogers finished first in the shotput (27-9).

Port Byron 96, Bishop Grimes 35

The Panthers won the 4x100m relay (56.3), the 4x400m relay (5:08) and the 4x800m relay (11:47).

Mindy Meyers took first in the 400m (71.2), Jenna Fronce won the 800m (2:47), Ashley Leja won the long jump (13-4), Kate Riley won the high jump (4-6), Tiffany Westmiller won the discus (57-1) and Anna Mahunik took first in the shot put (21-7.5).

SOFTBALL

Southern Cayuga 8, Newfield 1

Lianna May and Julie Hewitt combined on another one-hitter and allowed just three baserunners all game.

May started and pitched four innings, striking out four while Hewitt pitched the final three innings, striking out five.

At the plate, Hewitt went 3-for-4 with a double, Jessica Curry had two hits and Beth Rocker contributed a double and two RBIs.

The Chiefs (11-0) host Moravia Friday.

Cato-Meridian 12, Lafayette 1

Amy Thomas pitched well for the Blue Devils, with six strikeouts and allowing only one hit and one unearned run. At the plate, Thomas went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Julia Pratt stepped in as relief for three innings and threw five strikeouts.

Also leading the Blue Devils offense was Chelsea Townsend who went 4-for-5, Chelsea Terpening was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, Ashley Thomas came off the injured list, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Shayna Merriam hit her first varsity base hit and Kayla VanNorstrand came up to pinch hit and contributed a base hit.

The Blue Devils (6-5) host Tully today.

Solvay 1, Skaneateles 0

The Lakers outhit the Bearcats 4-2, but still couldn't come up with the win as Solvay scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on a Lakers error.

Pacing the Lakers, Alexis Jones recorded one hit and two stolen bases, Terry Blessing hit a double, Emily Devins tallied one hit and Rachael Wise stepped in as pinch hitter in the seventh earning a hit.

Alex Hughes allowed only two hits and finished with two strikeouts on the mound for the Lakers.

“We left eight girls on base,” Lakers head coach Bob Braunitzer said. “We just couldn't seem to piece the hits together and get a rally going.”

The Lakers (1-5) travel to Marcellus Friday.

Jordan-Elbridge 4, Bishop Ludden 1

After losing to Bishop Ludden three weeks ago, 10-2, the Eagles fought back to defeat them on Tuesday.

Jenn Gasparek led the Eagles on the mound, throwing 12 strikeouts.

Sarah Fordyce got the game started with a lead off triple in the second inning with Gasparek bringing in the RBI.

Lyndsy Geery followed up on an error working her way to third and stealing home on a catcher passed ball, Geery also singled and was brought in by a homerun hit by Liz Caspari.

BASEBALL

Auburn 12, Rome Free Academy 4

The Maroons brought out the bats as they faced a strong pitcher.

Ed Charles led the way going perfect at the plate, 3-for-3, with two runs and four RBIs.

Also batting well for the Maroons, Matt Wild was 2-and-4 with three runs and two RBIs, Nick Ventura was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs and Tim Locastro was 3-and-4 with one RBI.

“The play of the day was when Anthony Siracusa threw the ball into the dirt, it was picked up by Ventura who turned it into a double play,” Maroons head coach TJ Gamba said. “Our defense played great, we played really well all around.”

The Maroons (7-5) are still undefeated in the league (4-0) as they host Fayetteville-Manlius in a league game at Falcon Park Friday.

Moravia 15, Union Springs 1

Justin Stanton had a strong game on the mound for the Blue Devils pitching five innings with nine strikeouts, three walks and giving up only one hit.

Stepping in for relief and pitching two innings for the Blue Devils was Dillon Langtry who ended up with three strikeouts, one walk and three hits.Stanton was also effective for Moravia behind the plate going 2-for-4 and hitting his third solo home run over the fence.

Also batting for the Blue Devils was Eric Youngs who lead going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two doubles. Greg Pasho and A.J. Rouse helped out recording two RBIs apiece for the Blue Devils.

Pitching for the Wolves, Jim Burns pitched four innings, recording the loss and Jared Bretherton came in relief pitching two innings.

The Blue Devils (6-5) face Union Springs again today.

Skaneateles 5, Solvay 4

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Lakers led off with five hits, all scoring.

Sophomore Jake Bird earned his first varsity win on the mound for the Lakers, pitching six innings with four strikeouts, allowing only four hits and three runs. Nick Pasarchick picked up the save with three strikeouts, one walk, allowing one hit and one run.

Devlen Murphy led the Laker offensive attack going 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.

Also leading the Lakers Bill Weiss had a double, Jim Pittman hit a double and recorded one RBI and John Chapman had a single with an RBI.

The Lakers (4-8) travel to Marcellus Friday.

Faith Heritage 6, Port Byron 5

The Panthers were up 4-3 going into the top of the seventh where they gave up three runs. In the bottom of the seventh the Panthers tried to rally back scoring one run and ending the game with the tying run on first.

Kent Pitcher threw six innings for the Panthers with seven strikeouts, two walks, allowing six hits and six runs, four of them earned.

Matt Janusz stepped in the seventh allowing one hit and throwing one strikeout.

Leading the Panthers' offense was Janusz going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Tab Carmon also went 2-for-4, Pitcher was 2-for-3 at the plate and Tom Giannettino was perfect 1-for-1 with one RBI.

The Panthers (5-5) host Onondaga Friday.

Groton 15, Southern Cayuga 4

Chris Aguilar and Spenser Lawyer each had one hit and two RBIs for the Chiefs on Tuesday.

Louis Quill pitched three innings recording seven strikeouts.

BOYS GOLF

Lansing 207, Union Springs 215

Pacing the Wolves was Matt Cuff who shot a 42, Eric Hlywa, Tim Morabito and Austin Thomas each carded a 43 and Michael Bean scored a 44.

The Wolves (6-1) are still undefeated in the IAC Division III and will travel to Spencer-Van Etten Friday.

Pulaski 248, Cato-Meridian 258

Chris Sperling led the way for the Blue Devils shooting a 46.

Also scoring well for the Blue Devils was Todd Wilcox who carded a 49, Mark Walton recorded a 52, Paul Barbagallo scored a 54 and Ethan Holt finished with a 57.

Cato-Meridian (1-4) swing at Manlius Pebble Hill Friday.

Southern Cayuga 219, Odessa Montour 236

Jordan Dean and Lewis Morse both led the way shooting a 43.

Also shooting well for the Chiefs was Dan Le and Kyle Hurd-Perez who both carded a 44 and Ryan Killian earned a 45.

The Chiefs (7-2) play at Groton today.

GIRLS GOLF

Skaneateles 194, Cazenovia 224

Krissy Ryan led the way for the undefeated Lakers shooting a 46.

Also leading the Lakers was Lee Ryan and Ellie Youle who both carded a 48.

The Lakers (2-0) play the greens at Westhill today.
