George Bush is trying to blame Congress for his economic mess. You're doing a fine job, George.

It's easy to dismiss Cheryl Heary, head of the Republican Party, and Greg Rigby, head of the Conservative Party, as just being lazy and selfish and only interested in making money for themselves and not their party. But these two people actually support the Democrats and that's why they don't want to find candidates to oppose terrible, liberal Democrats.

In my opinion, no Barack Obama; it should be Gov. Wright, he's the best.

It's really tough to figure out who is hurting Auburn more and doing the most to destroy downtown Auburn, local judges who let the criminals out of jail to commit more violent crimes upon people or Guy Cosentino and his greedy effort to buy up all the property or Dan Schuster, who's not only trying to take Christmas out of Christmas but who supports putting those foolish kiosks downtown, which are driving people out in droves.

" dd, I do agree with you -- except....

The oil companies (and other corporations) have control over the government, so taking control out of the hands of the oil companies and giving it to the government doesn't solve the problem -- not unless you can first remove the undue influence of corporations on the government.

The other problem, of course, is even when government is not corrupt, it's mired in hopeless inefficiency and ineptitude.

I don't know how possible it really is, but the only way to get out from under the mess is to take those "human rights" away from corporations because they are NOT persons. Without those "rights," they don't wield nearly as much power. "

The Pentagon program's Ken Allard on MSNBCAuthor Glenn Greenwald notes, "It has now been more than ten days since the New York Times exposed the Pentagon's domestic propaganda program involving retired generals and, still, not a single major news network has even mentioned the story to their viewers, let alone responded to the numerous questions surrounding their own behavior." Greenwald helped prod NBC's Brian Williams into at least blogging about this issue, but "the essence of Williams' response [is] he did absolutely nothing wrong. Nor did any of the military analysts used by NBC News. Nor did his network. ... Just consider what is going on here. The core credibility of war reporting by Brian Williams and NBC News has been severely undermined by a major NYT expose. That story involves likely illegal behavior by the Pentagon, in which NBC News appears to have been complicit, resulting in the deceitful presentation of highly biased and conflicted individuals as 'independent' news analysts. Yet they refuse to tell their viewers about any of this, and refuse to address any of the questions that have been raised."

"We're buying, at the moment, about 67,000 to 68,000 barrels of oil per day, fulfilling statutory obligations to fill up the SPR. World demand is 85 million barrels a day. So the purchases for SPR account for one-tenth of one percent of global demand."

SPR = strategic petroleum reserve.

If it's 21 million gallons of oil a day, and that's one quarter of world consumption, that means (21 x 4) 84 million gallons used per day, makes (84 x 365) more than 30 billion gallons a year. Now those billions still in the ground are going fast.

BTW, I spent most of my adult life living within a mile of my workplace and walked more often than I drove except when I was carrying a load of books. I figure that makes up for my current long commute, and I'd like/I hope to cut that before too long. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on May 1, 2008 1:56 PM:

" Thanks, naturelover -- that would then be just shy of 25 million barrels a year, and presumeably that's just US consumers. Help me with my math -- that's a billion every 40 years just for the United States, provided we don't consume more as the population grows.

The Citizen, I understand, employs a lot of "stringers" -- people who work part-time submitting articles. They cost a lot less than full-time journalism-trained reporters, but the quality of their work is spotty.

Hummer, yes, there is the (lack of) aesthetic factor. Big, ugly, non-aerodynami square boxes tearing down the road. Well, to each his own, except the part about how the design contributes to the lousy fuel efficiency. "

48%--automobiles
6%----trucking
6%----railroads

60% subtotal, surface transportation
6%----airlines

1% possibly maritime (no figure for oil use by US shipping was shown)

3%----electricity generation

30% (approx.)--petrochemicals (paint, varnish, plastics, glues, lubricants, etc.)

100% US petroleum consumption, estimated for 2007.

Buses, transit use, were not shown separately.

US Dept. of Defense uses about 2% total of US oil fuel daily (about 480,000 barrels/day), at least according to official DOD sources. "

" Nice to see so many people believe in the eco-wingnut perpetuated myths about oil exploration in Alaska, particularly ANWR.

We're stuck in a stranglehold between the oil-rich middle eastern and South American nations we buy oil from, and the enviro-nuts in America who launch lawsuits every time an oil company tries to drill in a new place or open a refinery. This is one big factor in driving gas prices higher. Alternative energy sources are not developed enough for widespread use, so for the time being, we must explore every avenue to ensure we have enough oil... and according to a lot of sources, we have plenty on American land that is not being extracted.

True, it would take 10-15 years for ANWR oil to hit the market, but if we don't drill there, then in 10-15 years when we need the oil, we won't have it! (we should have started over 10 years ago when all this ANWR hubbub started, we'd be seeing it in our market already!) 10-15 years are going to go by whether we drill for the oil or not, wouldn't it be better to have it than not have it at that point? It's the same cowardly excuse that older people use for not going back to college. "Oh, I'm too old, and two years is too long." Well, you're going to be two years older in two years anyway, wouldn't it be nicer to have a better education instead of sitting on your duff and crying about it?

"there is nothing to drill for in ANWR!! Besides where would they start in almost 2 mill acres?"

FALSE. There is plenty to drill for in ANWR, and the potential is on the order of billions of barrels of recoverable oil and trillions of cubic feet of recoverable gas according to geological surveys done by the US over the past 20 some odd years (17 billion barrels of oil and 34 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, as indicated by a US Geological Survey in 1980, the estimate has since gone up). They already know where to drill, the area has been surveyed for decades.

There actually used to be a ban on exporting Alaskan crude to foreign countries (so the argument that any oil culled from ANWR wouldn't be used in the US is an empty one), but it was lifted in 1995... the lifting of that ban supported by who else? The Clinton administration.

There is absolutely no good argument against drilling in ANWR. "

If they want to "expose" some sign of wealth thru a vehicle, a caddie or 300 or beemer makes me say now there is a person with some finances.

When I post about public transportation, I was referring to a method that was more in this century. Like high speed rail service, what happened to that or even regular commuter rail service as the tracks owned by Fingerlakes RR cover ALOT of territory. And I love a train ride - certainly beats out the stinky diesel bus farts u are accustomed to.

And the Citizen does not "write" obits. The funeral director does based on info u give them and your direction. They then submit to the papers u want to have it listed in and the cost is part of the itemized funeral bill if a publication charges, which the citizen does.

If u a such a bleeding heart for old folks in walkers vs the mean ol' nasty kiosks - perhaps u should volunteer for 'options for independence'. Sorry u feel your visits here are so unfulfilling and boring and brick viewing is as good as it gets. Goes to show u arent really a local and need it spelled out.

Also too bad u feel the mall is below your premium shopping standards. I rarely shop 'out' as u end up buying more stuff than u really need. Just as I don't waste my time visiting the Mall. "

" Do you ever read the obits? I do, they are like mini-bio's filled with so much history.
So many of the elderly obits show that most were in WWII, most made items with their hands, and most volunteered for one or several organizations after retirement.

It makes me wonder 50 yrs from now what will the obits say?
So-n-so spent years in jail battling a drug addiction, shopped at walmart, and always asked for help from some organization.!?
