A Weedsport High School graduate has garnered national recognition by way of her pen.
Weedsport native and third-year Syracuse University Law School student Katherine Ritts was awarded the 2008 Scribes Law-Review Award, an annual award from Scribes The American Society of Legal Writers for the best student-written article in a law review or journal.
Ritts, executive editor for the Syracuse Law Review, won the award for her work “The Constitutionality of ‘Let Them Rest In Peace' Bills: Can Government Say ‘Not Today, Fred' To Demonstrations at Funeral Ceremonies.”
The article comments on the constitutionality of laws established to prohibit speech at funerals because of a religious group that protested the U.S. stance on homosexuality at military funerals.
Her article was chosen from a pool of more than 70 entries.
“I was pretty shocked actually,” Ritts said of winning the award. “It's really quite an honor to win it. There were more than 70 other entries and there were great articles written and published from our law review, so I can only imagine how great the articles were that were submitted.”
After graduation this month, Ritts will join the Bond, Schoeneck & King law firm in Syracuse practicing labor and employment law.
“I definitely feel good on the path that I'm on,” she said. “I'm graduating in a couple of weeks, I'm excited about that. Law school has been a very good experience, and this (award) is just one of the things that have made it so great.”
