AUBURN - The Auburn Enlarged City School District Personnel Office will soon be saying goodbye to paper.
In a move exemplifying ever-changing technological times, the district office responsible for hiring faculty and staff is now accepting job applications online with the expectation of going completely paperless by the beginning of the next academic year.
“Our hope is that by the time school opens in September we'll be completely paperless in terms of applications,” Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Jeff Pirozzolo said.
Earlier this month, the district unveiled SchoolStream, a Web-based job application software accessible on any computer by visiting the Auburn School District Web site at district.auburn.cnyric.org. At the top of the district homepage is a scrolling banner which will take all visitors to the employment page. Administrative, instructional and non-instruction employment opportunities can be found at the site.
Pirozzolo and District Clerk Lori Feeney said the online application process is beneficial for both applicants as well as the employees in the personnel office.
With just a few clicks of a mouse and typing a few keys on the keyboard, applicants can submit an application and upload resumes, letters of recommendation and certificates all at one time, saving photocopying and mailing costs, Feeney said. Additionally, applicants will know the district has received the employment materials as an automatic e-mail will be sent out confirming receipt. They will also receive e-mails when a posted position is closed or filled.
The district can also administer writing samples with this online system.
“It's getting us more information to make decisions and facilitating the process for applicants,” Feeney said. “It'll benefit us for the future.”
With just one part-time and two full-time employees working in the personnel office, the online application system streamlines the process, establishing greater organization, reducing the risk of human error and making it more efficient, Pirozzolo said.
“This is a great way for us to collect everything in an organized way and dispense all of the information out to the hiring managers or building principals,” he said.
Applicants must register for a username and password before applying for a position, Feeney said. Job postings can be viewed without a username.
Once a username is secured, visitors must fill out an application and then apply for a specific job as posted on the site. Applicants will not have actually applied for a job without completing both steps, Feeney said.
For those who do not have regular access to a computer, Pirozzolo and Feeney are working on getting a computer for the personnel office, located at the Harriet Tubman Administration Building, 78 Thornton Ave., Auburn.
Applicants can also apply for employment by visiting libraries in four district schools open to the community from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Seward Elementary School will be open on Monday nights, West Middle School will be open Tuesday nights, Owasco Elementary School will be open Wednesday nights and Casey Park Elementary School will be open Thursday nights. The libraries will be open during the school year while school is in session; that is, the library will be closed if there is a snow day or during vacations.
