An admitted drunk driver will serve from one to three in prison for a crash that seriously injured a Skaneateles police officer.
In April, Jay A. Searle, 40, of 2413 Glover Road, Marcellus, admitted he was driving with a blood-alcohol content of .28 when he ran a stop sign and collided his vehicle into that car driven by William Marventano.
Searle was sentenced Monday in Onondaga County Court.
Searle pleaded guilty to first-degree vehicular assault and a felony charge of driving while intoxicated. The judge considered Searle's 2006 driving while under the influence charge, which boosted his 2008 DWI charge to a felony, said representatives from the Onondaga County District Attorney's Office Tuesday.
Besides a part-time officer in Skaneateles, Marventano also is director of security at Cayuga Community College in Auburn.
Both Marventano and his wife, Debbie, sought medical treatment, but the officer's injuries kept him at University Hospital for weeks. He suffered head, abdomen, and leg wounds. The impact of the crash caused Marventano to be thrown from the wreckage, despite wearing a seat belt.
The collision occurred at Lee Mulroy and Bishop Hill roads, just outside Skaneateles at 10:15 p.m. Jan. 10.
