Hospital volunteers assist in many ways

There is a special group of dedicated individuals at Auburn Memorial Hospital who receive no financial compensation for the valuable role they play in assisting the staff at AMH. During National Volunteer week, we will be celebrating and thanking these very special people.
Our 90 plus volunteers are truly the “Heart of Our Community.” They respond to the needs of our patients, staff and visitors with overwhelming support and compassion. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Some are retired and want the opportunity to give back to others and a feeling of still being productive. Others have spent their time raising families and now it is their time to pursue a different challenge.

Volunteers at the hospital assist in 25 various departments throughout the hospital and Finger Lakes Center for Living, our 80 bed long-term care facility. They have logged in more than 13,000 volunteer hours in 2007 escorting patients to various tests or therapy, providing information and comfort in the surgical waiting area, greeting visitors and patients at the information desk. AMH volunteers also assist staff by running errands, picking up x-rays, reports and medical records. They help as cashiers in the dietary department and our gift shop. We have volunteers who assist staff with clerical duties in administration, education, finance and medical records. The job list is endless.

The volunteers make my day and my job very rewarding. I enjoy their positive comments and never ending smiles. One of my favorite quotes comes from a gentleman volunteer. When asked why he volunteers he replied, “I'd love to tell everyone that if you are broken-hearted, or depressed or you have lost someone you love, volunteering is the answer to your problems. It provides immediate gratification.” I have heard these same words from many of the volunteers at AMH.

Thank you never seems to be enough to say for the overwhelming support and compassion they offer, the needs they fill, the emotional support they give and the endless energy they all possess. AMH administration and staff give thanks to all volunteers, unceasingly grateful for the dedication and labor of love in all the work they do.
