Families need more voice in redrawing school lines

Monday, April 28, 2008 11:44 AM EDT

I am writing regarding the ongoing threat to remove kids from certain schools due to class size. No, I did not use wrong terminology, that's exactly how I see it, as a threat!
My family and I purchased our home specifically for the Herman Avenue and East opportunity. To have this possibly gone for one of our two kids would be wrong.

OK, I understand the need, but to say this is how, who, why, and when is unfair without having a voice from students and parents.

I empathize with the decisions the board and Mr. Pabis must make over this matter and only ask that they all ask and we all consider those students that may wish to move or those that may benefit from a specific need to move. I appreciate the Herman Avenue staff and families and truly feel that a move to another school will only hurt what we have been able to accomplish.

Not just “we” as in my family and I, but we as a district and community.

" They should close a school and fire all the administrators that work there then maybe our taxes would go down. Consolidate services and shrink the bloated system. In NYC the Catholic Schools have 18 administrators for the whole system, we have that for one school. "

" Populations and demographics change. Student populations have to sometimes be shifted to balance class and school sizes. The district has to meet the needs of the schools as a whole not to meet your needs. If you want to control what school you children attend then enroll them in a private school. Your kids will survive if they attend a different school. There is no promise that a house sale will buy you attendence at a specific school. Of course we could just jack up the school and move it for you. "
