Cayuga County's March unemployment rate reached 5.9 percent, exceeding both the state average and the county rate for the same month a year ago.
The latest job market data released last week by the state Department of Labor continued to show a weakening local economy.
The unemployment rate was higher year-over-year for the fourth consecutive month, with the March increase being the largest so far.
The March 2007 rate was 4.7 percent. The 2008 rate was the highest for the month since 2004, when it hit 6.2 percent.
Statewide, the unemployment rate was 5.1 percent, up from 4.4 percent in 2007.
The county's March rate did go down from the 6.2 percent rate posted for February, reflecting normal seasonal fluctuations.
The labor department reported a year-over-year increase of 5,000 people for the number of unemployed people in the county. There are currently 2,400 unemployed in the county.
The number of employed people, at 38,400, was down by 400 from a year earlier.
Until December, the county's monthly jobless rate had been at or below the previous year's rate for more than a year. The previous monthly increase was reported for August 2006.
In the four straight months of recent increases, the March figure represents the biggest climb, at 1.2 percentage points. The other three increases had all been under a percentage point.

Spend, spend, spend, ordinance, ordinance, ordinance, just like a business, just like a business, just like a business...
How are they suppose to be helping Auburn...Auburn is a relic that needs to be cast in bronze as a memeory of what was once so good so long ago.
-only problem, this "business" can't shut down and layoff it's employees or subcontract out it's workforce...wait it's already doing that.
-were like lambs to the slaughter... "
