AUBURN - One bad inning.
That's what has plagued the Weedsport baseball team this season. The Warriors have been within striking distance in each outing, but errors have proven costly.
But not on Friday.
Sophomore Justin Rose gave the Warriors seven strong innings and his defense backed him up in a 15-4 victory over Union Springs in the first round of the Cayuga County Baseball Tournament at Falcon Park.
Weedsport will play Moravia in the championship game today while Union Springs takes on Port Byron in the consolation game.
The Warriors committed just one error and their offense gave Rose quite the cushion with an eight-run second inning.
“We're been hitting the ball all year,” Weedsport coach Nick Wilson said. “But it's all about that last column on the scoreboard - one error. That's big for us. It's been one inning here and there that has hurt us. We finally played a complete game.”
The Wolves kept putting the ball in play and the Warriors defense kept eating it up.
Rose, in his first career start, struck out just one batter but was consistently ahead in the count.
“It's important because I'm not usually striking people out,” Rose. “The hitters are going to put the ball in play so I have to rely on the defense.”
Showing no jitters in his mound debut, Rose allowed six hits, four runs and walked four in the complete game. He also got the job done at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Gavin Johnston had four hits with an RBI for Weedsport while Tony Piascik had two hits and two RBIs.
After a scoreless first, the Warriors heated up at the plate, batting around in the second.
With one out, Johnston and Rose had back-to-back hits before Jamie Briggs plated the first run of the game with an RBI bloop single.
Two batters later, CJ Chase drove in two runs on a hot-shot single just past a diving Justin Lyndacker at shortstop.
Nick Topichak, Josh Fatcheric and Johnston added consecutive RBIs to knock Union Springs' starter Jim Burns from the game.
Brian Quigley, PJ Piascik and Jordan Stott added RBIs later in the game.
For Union Springs, David Wilczek had two hits and pitched 5 1-3 solid innings in relief. Wilczek gave up five earned runs and struck out three in his appearance.
Austin Doody also added two hits and two RBIs for the Wolves.
Weedsport (2-4) now has the task of derailing Moravia, a team that has won this tournament five straight seasons.
“It's certainly nice to be here but we didn't show up to make it (to the title game),” Wilson said. “Our kids believe they can win this.”
Due to inclement weather, the start of play Saturday has been changed.
The consolation game will now begin at 9 a.m. with the championship game following at noon.
