Our View: Hits & Misses

Friday, April 25, 2008 11:40 PM EDT

HIT: To the approval of School Resource Officers (SROs) for the Union Springs and Port Byron school districts. The Cayuga County Legislature voted to create SRO positions at its meeting this week.
The SROs serve an important purpose to help keep schools safe. Port Byron hasn't had an SRO in six years and Union Springs has never had one.

MISS: To the brush fire that injured three people and scorched about four acres of land in Moravia on Monday.

Dry conditions this spring have led to an increased risk of brush fires, causing Cayuga County to issue a state of emergency order that is in effect until Sunday.

The order prohibits anyone in the county from outdoor burning or recreational fires. Hopefully, people will abide by this order and we'll get some much-needed rain soon to prevent any new fires from breaking out.

HIT: To National Turn Off Your Television Week. It's always a good idea for children to take time to do something else besides watch television.

During a week in which Cayuga County enjoyed summer-like weather, local children had more reasons than ever to put down the remote and pick up a ball or hop on their bicycles.

Yes, some television can be educational and informative for children, but there has to be a time when they know there are healthier things to do than sitting on the couch in front of the tube.

HIT: To the three new Cayuga County sheriff deputies who officially joined the ranks this week. The trio expressed their enthusiasm for serving the public and look forward to rewarding futures with the sheriff's department.

All three came from different backgrounds but now share a common bond - protecting the citizens of Cayuga County.

Of course, any time there is more law enforcement on the streets, it is hopefully a deterrent to crime.

We wish them safe and satisfying careers as sheriff's deputies.

" Before we get more confused about the turf issue, please go this website. It is the old, "rug over cement" turf that is outmoded and unsafe. Modern materials are not. Neither the Auburn schools, nor SED, nor the health department is interested in endangering our students.

" Turn off your television week is not just for kids. And it should be turn off your television for good, or until the tv conglomerates start showing some respect for democracy. Like that'll happen. "
