Adding turf to Holland Stadium is an improvement

Friday, April 25, 2008 11:48 AM EDT

I have to agree that Auburn should fix what they have. That is exactly what the Auburn school board is trying to do.
We need to fix our schools and the crumbling Holland Stadium. By adding the turf field to the stadium, it will enhance our school and our community. Auburn is far from being the mostly run-down, broken outfit. The whole community should take pride in our student athletes, no matter where they play. They are a great bunch of kids!

As for the softball fields at Herman Avenue School, they are owned and maintained by the City of Auburn.

" I agree Brew if this was to be the TRUE case-BUT we are talking about AUBURN school board-that have done nothing but LIE --If anyone was to vote yes thru public donations The people deserve to SEE the donators and the amounts check by check to PROVE they are true donations FOR TURF.

I also agree that the band practicing on pavement can be HOT on certain days, BUT we all know the facts are the board cannot pay for bussing to home games NOW for the band -they certainly wont pay for bussing for band or any sports teams to Holland simply for PRACTICE in the future!

There is no reason for the band to be on pavement anyways when Auburn High has LAND--my son teaches marching band here and they practice on the grassy area next to the band room and WHEN available the football field.

which brings on another point-who gets first dibs on Holland? Games over practices, BUT which games? And WHERE will the others practice or play? ON the OTHER MANY RUN DOWN FIELDS????? "

" Holland Stadium usage would include:JV and Varsity Football, Girls and boys soccer, girls field hockey, boys and girls varsity and JV lacrosse and this is just games. Also include a practice schedule for the above teams to include usage on Saturdays. The synthetic turf can be used whenever its free of snow. Oh yea the band would practice there also instead of the HS parking lot. "

" CM, turf is also for soccer, lacrosse, rugby, band and drum corps competitions. "

" A little kid chews on a Polly Pocket toy. I wouldn't recommend a little kid chewing on turf. These reports of dangerous turf are older styles of turf that are no longer produced.
And Karl, haven't I made the point that the savings of lower maintenance costs and increased use and rental revenues would offset replacement costs. And before the field needs replacing start a new round of fund raisers to pay for it. You have 10 years to prepare for that. If school budgets get tight and the taxpayers have had enough then all sports budgets should be funded by user fees. The school system should only pay for salaries of coaches. Sports boosters should be raising funds for athletic budgets full time. It would free up more funds for education without increased taxes. Oh, Oh, got to go, this is looking like a post from FG. "

" tbl4,
All Auburn students including Phys. Ed. classes ,and athletes ?????

NOT all will get use out of turf, thats a total lie. Do they plan on bussing all the PhysED classes to Holland? They cant even bus the band right now for home games.
Even Brew said on last discussion Turf is for football, NOT all sports.
I agree Holland needs work, and so does ALL the other school fields. Why favor just one?

As for lead-well there is only "small" amounts in a super tiny Polly Pocket toy too-but they are off the shelf! "

" Vinmeister...
You are absolutely correct. Cement and foundation work is part of the renovation project. It is not "just turf" "

brew1234 wrote on Apr 24, 2008 2:02 PM:

" Karl, what is the harm in turf if the taxpayers do not have to foot the bill for it? If private donations finance it why not let them spend their money? "

tlb4 wrote on Apr 24, 2008 2:02 PM:

" Hilltop,All Auburn students including Phys. Ed. classes ,and athletes as well as community members will be able to use the new Holland Stadium turf. The only difference is the usage will go up to 9 or 10 months out of the year instead of only 7. "

tlb4 wrote on Apr 24, 2008 1:54 PM:

" How about this Karl, proof that intelligent people can change their minds when given the facts. Joe Leogrande, once a vocal opponent to renovations to Holland Stadium voted FOR THE PROJECT because the district found funding to OFFSET taxpayers costs. Mr Leogrande went on to say "I want to thank the community...for raising the $150,000....I said there would be no complaint from me if the money was raised. I told you I would vote for it in a heartbeat if we raised the money."
I commend MR. Leogrande for keeping his word. Thank You sir. "

" I am a person who runs through Holland stadium daily. The place is a mess. You need to spend money elsewhere than turf. Why not fix the seating and the cracked cement if you have to fix something. Upgrade it so that it is nice not just keep the same old shoe and just put a new insole in it. I would rather see Auburn spend their money on their children and not just on one measly little field. It is a waste and represents why Auburn continues to make mistakes daily. "

" In response to the CNS stadium synthetic turf: The Onondaga health commissioner was quoted as saying " I feel there is no risk to students or athletes" The CNS school superintendent said "We agree with the New Jersey officials there is little or no health risks to our students, we are suspending activities at the field to dial back some of the panic" When all tests are completed you will see that the lead found in the CNS grass fibers is of extremely low bioavailability (cannot be broken down in your body)and poses no health risk even if ingested. Wait and see. Besides this is the 10 year old type of turf that Auburn would not be installing at Holland. "
