LOCKE - A head-on collision involving a delivery truck and a small car in Locke Friday seriously injured a Geneva woman.
The crash happened at about 10 a.m. on Route 90 between Toll Gate Road and Route 38.
According to State Trooper Thomas Badman, a 1999 Isuzo truck was traveling eastbound along Route 90 when the driver, Daniel Chambers, 26, of Cortland, became distracted by picking up something from the vehicle's floor and drove into the oncoming westbound lane. A 1996 Dodge Neon driven by Jennifer Rhodes, 30, of Geneva, was in the oncoming lane and was hit head-on, despite Rhodes' attempt to avoid the truck, Badman said.
Rhodes was airlifted by Mercy Flight to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.
Chambers was transported to Cortland Regional Medical Center, complaining of pain in his legs. He was treated in the emergency department and released.
Firefighters used "Jaws of Life" hydraulic cutting tools to help them remove Rhodes from her vehicle. Her legs were pinned by the dashboard as the entire front end of the Neon was crushed in the crash. Badman said the driver's side airbag probably saved her life.
Chambers, an employee at Doug's Trash Removal in Groton, was driving a company truck carrying cardboard recycling at the time of the accident, owner Doug Brown said.
Badman said he will likely issue a ticket to Chambers for failing to keep right.
