To the Aurora Ledyard Fire District:
The Aurora Volunteer Fire Department is asking for your support on Tuesday, April 22.
Please come to the Aurora firehouse to approve the purchase of a Quint emergency vehicle. The members take great pride in belonging to an organization which benefits the entire community. The average age of the current active membership is 46. The nature of the work performed by a firefighter or EMT at an emergency scene can be very physical and stressful. EMTs, firefighters and fire police are all needed.
The AVFD formerly had a fleet of seven vehicles with an average service age of 29 years old. The recommended vehicle service life recommended by the National Fire Protection Agency is 20 years.
In 2006 the 47-year-old pumper was taken out of service because of safety and reliability issues. In 2007 the 50-year-old ladder truck was taken out of service for the same reasons. This leaves the department with only two trucks that fall within the NFPA recommendation of 20-year service life. The department's goal for years has been to work with the Aurora Ledyard Fire Commissioners to replace aging vehicles with newer, more universal apparatus.
The Quint will have a 500 gallon water tank, a 2,000 gallon per minute pump, a 75 foot aerial ladder and compartment space for rescue equipment such as the “jaws of life.”
The purchase of the Quint vehicle will enable the department to replace the out of service ladder and pumper trucks and also remove the current rescue truck from service.
In 2007, the volunteers responded to 171 calls. Please support your volunteers not only by approving the purchase of the Quint fire apparatus, but by providing support throughout the year.
