News media should have more respect, less gossip

Thursday, April 17, 2008 11:40 AM EDT

Can news media be more respectful? I was disgusted to see the front page of the Saturday Citizen, April 12 edition. A young man had been killed in a car accident and a family is grieving. How can people be so disrespectful in a death tragedy like this?
I would have hated to be in his family's shoes, reading the front page that day, as they are already grieving over his death. There's no reason whatsoever that a young man's past should be brought up as it had nothing to do with him getting killed. When people do get in trouble and arrested, it's in the paper already, so there's no reason to bring it up again.

No one person is perfect and I am sure we have all made mistakes at one time in our life. I know how they feel because I have a son who has been in trouble and has since changed his life around and also has two young children.

I know I wouldn't like to see something like that on the front page if something happened to him like that. There's no reason whatsoever that their past history has anything to do with that.

It seems like people should be more respectful of family members feelings when they are going through a difficult time like this. It's hard to believe the news media is full of gossip even at a time like this.

My thoughts are with the family at this grieving time. Much sympathy is sent out to the Gary Hill family.

" As I've said before, good, bad what ever, this guy didn't care who was on the road when he was leading the police on a high speed chase, nor did he care at three oclock in the morning when he failed make a small curve on rts 5&20. It didn't happen, but could have, some innocent family at the wrong place at the wrong time, because the driver still thought he could speed again. "

" If I was guilty of this behavior I would expect the paper to publish my acts. It is the right of the public to know the facts. It's called the free press. As a family member I would not care about what is in the paper but what is in my heart. You love your children no matter what crimes they committ. Get a life. "

" I am perfect.

I am just presenting the facts a nd offering my opinion.

Have they released the toxicology yet?

We are lucky that the only person this guy killed was himself. He was an absolute menace to society. "

" i agree that this was a tragic event but this young man did not consider his family enough to curtail his reckless behavior. the citizen is only reporting the news. if this man had led a truly productive life then we would have read about all of his successes. "

" Ms Perry, nice letter...this isn't the first time the citizen has disrespected a grieving family in fact the stories are somewhat similar. If a person is killed or dies tragically who the hell should care what his or her past may have been, these people left behind many loving memories, family, & children whose lives have been changed forever... don't forget that God only takes the good!
And to Mr or Ms a$$nonymous were you never taught to be careful of stones that you throw or have/are you a perfect person your comment was deff rude & crude!!! "

" To bad the people that sign anonymous. They must be ashamed to say who they are for what people might say about them. Also, for the person who couldn't sign their name to the article I know you have never made mistakes or anything in your life,RIGHT???? Nobody is perfect we all make mistakes and it is ashame that the citizen has to bring this all back up in the article. They had already published this information. "

" To quote the article:

Hill fled at speeds exceeding 90 mph after a Department of Environmental Conservation officer tried to stop his vehicle after he had been using a spotlight and a rifle to hunt deer at about 4:30 a.m. Nov. 15, 2007. He admitted in court to being under the influence of marijuana at the time of his arrest and to having had two pounds of marijuana in a shed at his home. He had been living on Spencer Street in Lyons at the time.

Hill was facing a maximum of seven years in state prison for criminal possession of marijuana, fleeing an officer and using a spotlight and a loaded weapon to hunt for deer.

Guess we know he was a danger to himself and others, and he proved it. "
