Even with a great second-half effort.
Skaneateles fought back from a nine-point deficit but still lost to Class B power Westhill, 16-12 Tuesday.
The score was tied 3-3 in the first 10 minutes of play but the Lakers lost the lead, allowing the Warriors to score three consecutive goals in under five minutes.
Struggling defensively, the Lakers allowed 11 points in the first half and faced a six-goal halftime deficit.
“We started slow, they were the better team today,” Lakers senior midfielder Kelsey Nangle said.
The Lakers came out in the second half looking much stronger offensively, scoring in the first six minutes but the Warriors answered every shot, extending their lead to 15-6.
Fighting back from the deficit, the Lakers posted another four points before allowing the Warriors another shot. The Lakers got their last goal in with just more than a minute left on the clock.
But it was too little, too late with the Warriors running the clock out for the victory.
“We need to play like that in the beginning,” Lakers head coach Bridget Marquardt said of the second-half surge.
It may have been a big margin of victory for Westhill but on the field the teams played quite even.
The Lakers had 16 ground balls to the Warriors 15. The Warriors had 19 turnovers in the game with the Lakers only tallying 16 turnovers.
Leading the Warriors was Katie Doherty with six points, Laura Zimmerman earned three points and four assists and Annie O'Connor contributed two goals and two assists.
The Lakers' Heather Mullen posted 10 saves while the Warriors' Morgan Roach had 12 saves with 32 shots on goal.
Skaneateles was paced by Nangle who scored five goals.
“The ball just didn't bounce our way,” Nangle said. “Westhill was fired up today.”
Also scoring for the Lakers was Shannon Tierney earning three goals and two assists, Jenna Lotkowictz added two goals and two assists and Laura Trenti and Maddy Morrissey both contributed one goal.
Despite the loss the Lakers, are still looking to win sectionals and make it back to the Class C state championships to take back the crown.
Last season, they lost their attempt at a third straight state title to Shoreham-Wading River in the finals, 11-9.
“It was our first day on the field and it's early,” Marquardt said.
“Westhill is a good team that is well coached. I am disappointed in the way we played but I am proud of the girls from coming back from an eight-point deficit, they played hard. We are just going to take it one game at a time and concentrate on practicing hard tomorrow for our big game on Thursday.”
The Lakers (2-2) play at Christian Brothers Academy Thursday.
