Curb repairs should not be homeowners' burden

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 11:49 AM EDT

I am pleased to know that our block of Cayuga Street is scheduled for resurfacing this year. However, I am totally baffled for the following reasons, why the city thinks it is the individual homeowners' responsibility to pay for curbs.
1. Curbs are not a luxury. They are essential for proper drainage, water runoff and helping to keep cars off front lawns.

2. Repeated pavings by the city caused the loss of the original curbs. Why should we pay for that short-sightedness?

3. What if only a few people opt to install curbs. Will there be no curbs in front of the other homes? Is this the image or esthetics the city wishes to display?

4. If the homeowner pays for the curbs, wouldn't the city still own them and who would pay for repairs if they got damaged, say by a snowplow?

5. We pay a special Capital Improvement Tax; why aren't those funds being used to pay for curbs?

6. While we all hate more taxes, I feel that curbs are necessary and belong to the city. The city council should take the responsibility to find the money elsewhere and pay for them.

" Brew u are highly regarded as the dude with cronic hoof and mouth disease. 'ALL over America'...wow u are SO travelled and cultured - in your eyes perhaps. Us Auburn jerks, huh? Again, u DONT live here, u have ZERO clues what day to day life is. When was the last time you called the engineers office and got some REAL facts!! U are notorious for your simple brushing off of common concerns we as TAX paying citizens deal with on a day to day basis. Find some solid proof in code books 'across America' where curbs are 'required by the nature of the location.' What kind of generalized sentence is that? And again elitist is your middle name for the line 'If you can't handle the expenses of your home then maybe you should sell it instead...'. Maybe you being so well educated and so wealthy can come here and buy these properties. U can start in September when the public auction takes place. Then when u rehab these homes and put in curbs and ALL else, we will hail u the urban king, u know how you view yourself. Oh ya, how many houses have u rehab'd again to know the real cost and how Auburn code works again, I forget, its the jerk portion of my pea brain that can't remember that. "

" All over the country you are required to pay for your curbs and sidewalks. Why would Auburn be any different. Each street is determined if curbs are required by the nature of the location. Public safety and pedestrian traffic are considered. If a grant can be found to pay for curbs or sidewalks then great but if not it is your responsibility. You jerks complain about taxes you are paying but you want to pay for other peoples curbs and sidewalks? And will your poor neighbor be any better off after she pays for the curbs and sidewalks for other residents? Don't you understand that if you add to what the city supplies to homeowners you will be setting yourself up for even higher taxes? If you can't handle the expenses of your home then maybe you should sell it instead of asking the taxpayers to bail you out with free betterments to your property. Again I ask you to think before you insert your foot in your mouth. "

" I wholeheartedly agree with u Lawrence. Our street is also slated for what the city engineers office called a mill down and we would probably c about 1" of curb reappear. We are still hashing out the idea of paying for curbs even though we have roof work and painting slated for this year. Reconstruction is where the city will pay for all including curbs but most likey u would lose some frontage.

Brew as usual u are out of touch not living here as most of Auburn's curbs are buried beneath constant retars. Curbs required? nope u are wrong there. Pipes yes, all the way out to the road - can have that added to taxes also. Sidewalks yes but best to check to c if your 'hood may be slotted at some time for the federal program that pays for them. We were lucky in that we have all new sidewalks at zero cost. When the city quotes $35-$40 a linear foot for curbs u should really think of your fellow neighbor as in they may be old or a family barely making it. Arrogant and stupid..hmm I will have to pin those traits on you. Stop acting like you are elite. "

" Curbs should be paid for by the city. They are not required for all properties. They are on city property. Why do they select certain properties? If all were required, then I would say all pay or none. "

" Why do you install curbs? Because they are required. "

" Welcome to life in the big city. Why do you think the taxpayers are responsible for your curbs? You are also responsible for the sidewalks and the sewer pipes as they enter your property. How arrogant of you to think that others are supposed to supply you with improvements to your property. Think next time before you make stupid public statements. "
