Child Care Council seeks community support

Tuesday, April 15, 2008 11:51 AM EDT

Young children are the future of our communities, and there are many ways Cayuga County can come together for children.
Please join the Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes in our celebration of Week of the Young Child, April 13 to 19, 2008, as we recognize and support the importance of early learning for all young children in our community.

Make a difference in your community:

€ Support early literacy programs. Early reading skills are crucial for young children to be ready for school.

€ Reach out and thank parents, teachers, care givers, and all adults who help young children get a great start.

€ Support policies at the local, state, and federal levels that provide high-quality early learning opportunities for all young children.

To learn more about the Child Care Council and what the council can do for families, child care providers and children please call 255-6994.

" Well literacy skills are crucial. I mean I know for a fact that you do not know your childs potential until they set a goal with you and break it in impressive fashion. Of course as a parent you are needed for guidance along the way. Our daughter when she read 500 books in a little over 4 months was what hard work can be done with your child. The thing is that is was FUN! It was a bonding experience. The thing was is that we never thought it waould happen but she pulled through it even after a major car accident. Kids can surprise you once you tap into that potential. Now I agree that begging them to learn in their first year is way too much but they can learn more than you think. Like with anything it is al what yout put into it.

" I do like little kids and I do believe they are our future. But, I think allowing kids to be kids for a little while is better than pushing them to learn too early. I find the people who want us to: "Support early literacy programs." Are usually wanting us to pay more in taxes to pay for these programs. Any parent who takes the time to read to their children will do more good for them than any program out there. Some people out there will say some parents don't have the time for this (an excuse I don't believe, they need to make time for their family) or the parent themselves can't read (another excuse, they should learn to read too).

"Early reading skills are crucial for young children to be ready for school." I ask why? Doesn't the school teach kids how to read anymore? If we were to go back to when our taxes paid only for K-12 grade and we dropped the Pre-K would this really hurt our kids? In the end result I find that starting early has not made the finish any better. As most of the reports we hear say High School drop outs are increasing. So how did Pre-K help these kids? I also believe that if you want to put your kids into Pre-K programs then good for you and you should pay for it not the tax payer. So let's cut our taxes and eliminate programs that in the end don't work. "
