The general public will soon get to see what Leadership Cayuga has been working on the past few months.
The Leadership Cayuga Class of 2008 will present the results of their group projects at 5 p.m. April 23 in the Rowley Auditorium at Auburn Memorial Hospital.
Leadership Cayuga, a program of the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce, is dedicated to developing and enhancing the leadership skills of area citizens and fostering a commitment to community service and business leadership.
In line with that mission, class members are required to explore a plethora of topics and initiatives for group projects as part of the overall program.
According to Program Coordinator Ginny Kent, these projects typically exemplify an ongoing topic or issue, “something that has the potential to improve the quality of life in our county.” These projects are assigned to class members in January, and once finished, they are turned over to various agencies or institutions in the hope that the entities can benefit from the members' work.
The class of 2008 developed for this year's set of projects a health weight initiative for Cayuga County, explored resort development, researched opportunities for Tomatofest and helped devise the Leadership Cayuga Alumni Project as well as the Cayuga County Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame project.
“The projects require diligence, ingenuity, commitment and leadership of each class member,” Kent said in a news release. “They use this activity to investigate some aspect of community life and create an outcome to benefit the community.”
Additionally, Kent said these projects are key in fostering strong group dynamics, as each person in the group brings different qualities to the table. Members have to learn how to work well with one another to create the best project.
“They get to work on this in a way that evolves for their group,” she said, “so it's just an interesting process to go through if you are in those groups.”
