Paterson: expand NY bottle bill a goal to generate revenue

ALBANY -- Just a week after the current state budget was passed, Gov. David Paterson is pushing his idea to cut next year's state budget by an unheard-of 5 to 10 percent.
He also is giving some hints as to how he would do that.

He's promising hundreds of environmental activists on Tuesday that he is making a goal of passing an expanded bottle bill this legislative session. That would require deposits for non-carbonated beverages including bottled water.

Under the proposal the state would collect millions of dollars in unredeemed deposits which are now kept by bottlers.

The Republican-led Senate and the bottling industry have been opposed to the bill.
