Auburn should fix what it has, not get new turf

I cannot believe our school board is even considering asking the taxpayers to pay for a new turf field. This school district has enough problems already.
I attended the JV girls softball game on April 9, 2008, at Herman Avenue. What a disgrace it was. It made Auburn look like the poorest city in New York state. The back stop is all rust and in need of a paint job. There were no bleachers or anything for the spectators or the players and coaches to sit on. Nothing but cold ground. There are no facilities for anyone there, not even the children have a place to use a restroom or get a drink of water; no water access for the players or umpires even.

I have traveled to many sporting events around New York and outside of this state, and by far Auburn is the most run-down broken outfit. We are lucky other cities will travel here to play us, they will probably stop soon.

The school board would be better off spending our tax money on fixing up what we already have and maintaining it, than creating another mess that will look like a dump in five years.

The only bright spot to this tragic field is that the young ladies on the Auburn High JV team play hard and show great team spirit and do not allow their surroundings to embarrass them or affect their playing of the game.

" Missey1941 lets look a little closer at your lead in turf story. The pigment used to color the nylon fiber in synthetic turf contains lead chromate. This lead chromate is very INSOLUBLE and has a very low bioavailability. This means that even if the compound were ingested it is very difficult for the compound to be absorbed within the body.
The City of Newark conducted analysis using EPA protocols on one of the fields you referred to. Their conclusion was THE LEAD CHROMATE CANNOT ESCAPE THE NYLON FIBERS WITHIN WHICH IT IS ABSORBED. More to come. "

" On the news today, high amounts of lead found in turf,Most schools will delay instillation until further study is done. "

" Chris, Talk to the city. They own the Herman Ave. field. The school district does not own it. The city took the bleachers away because they did not meet code. Complain to Mark Palish... "

" Strong work brew1234. I wonder if Chris Haff would vote yes on the upcoming Auburn school district capitol improvement project if it also included a new softball field-complex. "

" The same idiot that says vote down all propositions that the school board brings up, wants them to spend more money for upkeep of the ball fields. Which way do you want it? Give the schools a slum lord's budget and you get a slum. Big suprise fat head! "

" So do something other than whine on this forum. Try getting parents together and holding fundraisers. Try soliciting local businesses to donate money. Get a crew together to paint the backstop and build bleachers. Home Depot sells bleachers and may donate or give you a discount. DO SOMETHING! Stop whining for the school district to do something. The schools are cash strapped too, with rising energy and fuel costs and health care expenses the school system is on a tight budget. Get Dunky Donutz to donate some coffee and donuts for volunteers. You may even have some fun. Bring the whole family. If this spirit spreads to all parts of the city all the fields and parks could be improved. "
