Break it down

AUBURN - One thing that the group of Reva Free Style Krew has in common is they all would like to make rollerskating more popular, with hopes of someday getting a high school team.
“I mentioned something about having a high school team,” Jermaine Heleir, 17, said. “But they never gave me a comment back.”

On March 29, Helier and his teammates, Cody Cottrell and Matt McIntosh took first place in New York State World Skating Championships for the Elite team group, which is the 15-17 age group .

For two months, they practiced three times a week and have now bumped it up to four times a week in preparation for the national qualifier in Bradford, Mass. on May 23.

“We are just preparing for it the best we can,” Cottrell said.

At their practices, they do break skating routines and have been brainstorm ing other ways to make their routine more interesting. With the addition of Margot Ferro, who is also on the team but was unable to participate in the state competition, the foursome is confident in their chances.

Prior to the state competition, the group had discovered a love for skating. Helier got into the sport when he had one of his birthday parties at Reva Rollerdrome about five years ago. McIntosh credits the rhythm and style that skating produces as to how he got into the sport and Cottrell's passion came from simply working at Reva.

“My family got me into skating,” Ferro said.

Now Ferro and Helier teach a program at Reva to people those that want to learn how to skate.

“We teach them moves.” Ferro said. “Like how to break skate and shuffle.”

With hopes of making skating a popular sport again, working with those that want to get involved at a young age can only help.

They are also wearing their team shirts around Auburn High School, trying to get more people involved and have made a DVD of clips of their action.

Off the skating rink, they all have other dreams. Helier and Cottrell want to get involved in construction. Ferro wants to either be a singer or an actor, and McIntosh wants to go to SUNY Cortland to study business management. His dreams consist of starting up his own skating rink.

“If they were to take over Reva, I would be okay with that.” Reva's owner Michael Ferro said.

“As long as they can keep it to the same level or better. Then I have no problem with that.”
