Eighth grader Andy Leary was the medalist of the match, scoring a 45 for the Port Byron boys' golf team in the squad's first-ever win on Wednesday.
The Panthers defeated Cato-Meridian, 238-267 at Cranebrook Golf Course after the school started up the sport last season. Leary's classmates Dan O'Hara carded a 46, Josh Malenick scored a 27, freshman Dan Wilkinson turned in a 48 and Frank Smart had a 52.
For the Blue Devils, Chris Sperling shot the top score of a 48, Todd Wilcox carded a 51, Paul Barbagallo scored a 54, Marc Walton turned in a 55 and Brandon Bosco scored a 59.
“The course was in tremendous shape,” Panthers coach Steve Leary said. “And the conditions of 30 MPH winds made all the difference. It was our first week outside and the kids were tough on both teams.”
