CAYUGA - Sometimes all it takes is a little work to get a golf game back on par.
Michael Bean had been going through a rough past couple of days, but a few extra balls hit on the range seemed to do the trick. Bean shot a 35, a career low, as the Union Springs golf team beat Moravia 207-246 at Indian Head Golf Course Tuesday.
“Mike had been struggling a little bit lately,” Wolves coach Todd Salls said. “He went out to the driving range last night to hit some golf balls. He must have found what was wrong and worked on that.”
Also recording top scores for the Wolves was Matt Cuff with a 40 and Eric Hylwa with a 41.
“The boys shot very well,” Salls said. “They were very consistent today.”
While it's only the first match of the season for Union Springs, Bean was pleased with the early progress.
“I'm just really excited about how I played today,” Bean said. “I thought today went really well. I had a good swing today and the short game was good. My driving was a little rough though and the irons were good too.”
But of course, maintaining a high level of play isn't easy in golf. That's why, for Bean, it's all about repetition.
“I'm just going to remember what I did today,” Bean said. “And do it all again. Hopefully that works well.”
The Wolves' Tim Morabito carded a 44 and seventh-grader Austin Thomas shot a 47.
“We could be a tough team,” Salls said.
“We have to keep practicing and bringing in good scores. This is a pretty even league so nothing is just going to be given to you. Sometimes everything goes well for you at the golf course.”
The Blue Devils were led by Jeff Alvord with a 46 while their two seniors Anthony Canestaro and J.J. Weeks both shot a 49.
“We're a young team,” Blue Devils coach Fred Ott said. “We have only two returnees on the team.”
Moravia (0-2) travels to Lansing and Union Springs (1-0) hosts Thomas Edison today.
