State Canal Corporation changes hours of operation

The New York Canal Corporation on Monday announced it has revised its hours of operation for the state's canal system after concerns were raised by local businesses who relied on the waterways for their income.
Last March, the NYCC announced the hours of operation for the canal's locks and lifts would be reduced to 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. as a result of the corporation cutting down on the number of seasonal workers in an attempt to save nearly $1 million.

During a public hearing held by the Thruway Authority, representatives from the recreational and commercial boating communities said the decrease in hours would have a negative impact on regional economies.

“Increased utilization of our canals and waterways will drive business growth and create new jobs,” said state Sen. Michael Nozzolio in a press release. “New York is at the forefront of these economical opportunities and developing the canal's potential is a way to capitalize on our area's natural resources and beauty. (NYCC) Director Carmen Mantello deserves credit for listening to the concerns of community leaders and expanding hours this upcoming season to achieve those goals.”

The canal, which is home to four historic waterways, will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 23 to Sept. 3 during the peak boating season and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May 1 to May 22 and Sept. 4 to Nov. 15 when the season is slower.

" Now all we have to do is teach the boaters on the river what a NO WAKE ZONE is. Nothing half as bad as having a 30 footer go by throwing up a 6 foot wake and ripping out docks and disrupting fishermen. At least they are nice enough to wave at you as you run to try to save your gear from the rivers edge.:) "
