Koryn M. Badman will be remembered as an active person who touched the lives of those who knew her.
Badman, 15, passed away Wednesday at University Hospital following a long battle with primary pulmonary hypertension.
A sophomore at Moravia High School, Badman was a member of the cheerleading squad, first as a mascot in elementary school and later varsity cheerleader for 15 sports seasons and was a former member of the Brownies and Girl Scout Troop Number 1032.
“I think a lot of people got strength from her,” high school principal Brian Morgan said. “She battled a life-long illness and stayed active. She was somebody who, even with her illness, was full of life. She was just a real motivating type of person to other people. She lived with a lot of enthusiasm and it's sort of a blessing for everybody that had a chance to know her.
“If people like her can go through every day with a life-long illness, it sort of makes you think that your problems aren't that bad.”
Over the past three days high school counselors and psychologists held group counseling sessions for students, Morgan said. The sessions will continue for an extended time.
Calling hours were held in the gymnasium Friday for schoolmates, teachers and staff to console one another and talk about Badman.
“It's been a difficult day, but at the same time it was a very necessary day for everyone who works here and goes to school here,” Morgan said. “They had each other to console one another,”
The sophomore class will be brainstorming ideas to memorialize her over the next few weeks, Morgan said.
“It's great to see the kids come together over the past few days and want to remember her in special ways,” he said.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 3 p.m. today in the gymnasium of Moravia High School, South Main Street, Moravia, with the Rev. Wayne Hampton officiating. A reception will follow at the school cafeteria. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
“We're saddened about it, but we'll keep her memory alive and well here,” Morgan said. “People think very highly of her, and her spirit will live on.”
