Warriors pick up first wins of season

Alyssa O'Bryan finished first in two events - the 3,000m (13:30) and the high jump (4-8) - and was a member of two winning relay teams as the Weedsport girls track and field team earned its first win of the season against Moravia 88-43 Wednesday in Weedsport.
O'Bryan, Edmunds, Chelsea Paquette and Allison Roosa won the 4x400 relay (5:59) while O'Bryan, Amy Sanchez, Erin Daly and Ashley Edmunds won the 4x800 relay (12:31).

Sanchez also finished first in two other events, the 1500m (6:00) and the long jump (12-3.5).

Daly earned her second first-place finish in the 800m (2:56).

Despite the loss, Moravia walked away with a few substantial wins, including a new school record set by Jen Cornwell in the shot put with a distance of 34-6.5, breaking the record of 33-9 set in 1985.

“Hopefully this will be the first of many times she will break it,” Blue Devils head coach Jan Hunsinger said.

Cornwell also had a first-place finish in the discus (76-5).

Also winning for the Blue Devils, Kelleyanne McElfresh finished first in the 100m (14.4), the 200m (30.4) and participated in the 4x100 relay (58.8).

The 4x100 relay team members were McElfresh, Alicia McLaughlin, Jessica Higgins and Samantha Smith.

McLaughlin also finished first in the 400m hurdles (1:19.8) and Higgins had first place in the 100m hurdles (18.3).

Kayla Slater took first place for the Blue Devils in the 400m (1:23.2).

The Warriors (1-0) will run again Monday at home against Fabius Pompey.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Weedsport 90, Moravia 16

The Warriors' Jim Bos finished first in four events - as part of the 4x800 relay team (10:00), the 400m (56.6), part of the 4x400 relay (4:23) and tying for first with Zach Nevidomsky in the high jump (5-2).

Nevidomsky also won the long jump (18-9).

The 4x800 relay team included Jim Bos, John Bos, Zach Brown and Justin Spencer.

The winning 4x400 relay team included Jim Bos, Craig Mietz, Sean Ashby and Oliver Jordan.

Mietz also finished first in four events, including the 200m (25.0) and as a part of the 4x100 relay team (4:23). The team consisted of Jordan Petrocci, Ethan Gillette and Tim Roden.

Petrocci also won the 110m high hurdles (17.9), and the triple jump (37-1).

Also winning for the Warriors, John Bos finished first in the 800m (2:27) and Abe Jordan won the 400m intermediate hurdles (70.4).

Mike Greer finished first in the 3200m (11:25) and Dominic Galletta won the pole vault (10-0).

The Blue Devils' Logan Crandall won the shot put (46-1) and the discus (97-2) and Jason Phillips had a first-place finish in the 1600m (5:09.4).

“It was a very exciting race between Phillips and Greer (in the 1600m),” Blue Devils head coach Jan Hunsinger said. “It was a great sprint at the finish.”

The Warriors (1-0) will face Fabius Pompey at home Monday while the Blue Devils race at Watkins Glen Tuesday.

BASEBALL

Moravia 13, Elmira Notre Dame 9

It was a back-and-forth game for the Blue Devils who took the victory with three insurance runs in the seventh inning at Elmira Notre Dame.

Justin Stanton was the winning pitcher, going four strong innings with seven strikeouts, five walks and two hits.

Mike Drake earned the save, pitching three innings with five strikeouts, one walk and five hits.

Stanton also went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs on offense.

Also leading the Blue Devils, Greg Pasho and Drake went 2-for-4 and Drake earned two RBIs, Taylor Mackey went 2-for-3 and Eric Youngs had a double and two RBIs.

Freshman Dillon Langtry made his varsity debut, going 2-for-3 with one double and two RBIs.

Defensively for the Blue Devils (1-0), TJ Powers made a diving catch at third and threw out the runner at first to complete a double play.

BOYS LACROSSE

Jordan-Elbridge 13, Marcellus 10

Joe Poppe led the Eagles with five goals and two assists.

Also leading the Eagles, Josh Livingston earned two goals and two assists, Kory Smart scored two goals and dished out one assist and Brian Murry tallied two goals.

Abe Patrick contributed one goal and one assist, Brian Belcher scored one goal and Jeff Guadanolo had three assists.

Ken Bush finished the game with 12 saves.

On Monday, the Eagles beat Whitney Point, 14-3.

Leading the Eagles was Kory Smart with four goals and three assists.

Also scoring for the Eagles, Joe Poppe earned three goals and two assists, Josh Livingston had three goals and one assist, Brian Murry contributed two goals, Brian Belcher tallied one goal and four assists and Jeff Guadanolo finished the game with one goal and one assist.

Ken Bush racked up two saves and Connor Smart had three saves.

The Eagles (2-0) play against Watertown at Marcellus Saturday.
