PALMYRA -- A 20-car section of a freight train derailed early Thursday, spilling tons of coal and damaging railroad tracks in a small town in western New York.
The 85-car CSX train was traveling east when it derailed around 12:35 a.m. in Palmyra some 20 miles east of Rochester, the Wayne County sheriff's office said. No injuries were reported.
The derailment, possibly caused by a faulty axle, caused extensive damage to the tracks. Each car carried about 100,000 pounds of coal.
The train was headed from Buffalo to Fort Drum in northern New York. It was not carrying hazardous materials, CSX said.
