The Weedsport exit of the New York State Thruway, Exit 40, has reopened after being shut down until authorities removed what they first thought could have been an improvised explosive device, state police said.
State police are now saying the device, which was made of plastic and sheet metal and designed to look like a rocket-propelled grenade, contained no explosives.
State police are asking anyone with information about the device to contact them at 437-2831.
The exit had been closed for roughly two hours due to the police investigation.
A thruway maintenance worker found the device at roughly 2:30 p.m. and notified a state trooper.
No motorists were allowed on or off the highway from either direction. Traffic along the Thruway was allowed to continue.
Traffic backups in the village were minimal.
The closest exits to the Weedsport interchange are roughly 15 miles to the east (Exit 39 - I-690) and 16 miles to the west (Exit 41 - State Route 414).
The authority had activated message assigns in multiple locations along the Thruway to alert motorists to the situation.
